Multiple Explosions Rock Jakarta Mosque During Friday Prayers
At least 55 people have been injured after multiple explosions tore through a mosque at a state high school in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta. The blasts occurred around midday on Friday, 7th November 2025, in the Kelapa Gading neighbourhood, just as the weekly sermon was beginning.
Panic and Evacuation as Smoke Filled Building
Eyewitnesses described hearing two loud explosions that sent students and worshippers fleeing in panic. Grey smoke rapidly filled the building at SMA 27, a state high school located within a navy compound. The city's police chief, Asep Edi Suheri, confirmed that the explosions originated from near the mosque's loudspeaker, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Most of the injured victims suffered wounds from flying glass shards. Emergency services rushed multiple casualties to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police later stated that approximately 20 students remained in hospital, with three of them sustaining serious injuries.
Teenager Identified as Suspect in Ongoing Investigation
In a significant development, authorities have identified a 17-year-old as the suspected perpetrator. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, the country's deputy house speaker, revealed that the teenager was undergoing surgery following the incident.
A bomb squad deployed to the scene conducted a thorough search of the area. Investigators discovered toy rifles and a toy gun near the site of the explosions, adding a puzzling element to their inquiry. Police chief Suheri has urged the public to avoid speculation while the official investigation continues, promising to share results with the public once their work is complete.
Military personnel were seen standing guard at the scene in the aftermath of the blasts, securing the area as investigators worked to determine the precise nature and motivation behind the attack.
