FBI Director Kash Patel Denies Excessive Drinking Allegations Amid Security Concerns

FBI Director Kash Patel has vehemently denied allegations detailed in a recent report by The Atlantic, which claims he drinks to excess and has been unreachable at times during his tenure. Patel has threatened to sue the publication over the story, published on Friday, that cites concerns from two dozen current and former officials about his behavior and its impact on national security.

Patel's Response and Legal Threats

In response to the report, Patel told The Atlantic, "Print it, all false, I'll see you in court – bring your checkbook." On Saturday, he further addressed the allegations in an X post on his official FBI account, calling the story "fake news" and a "hit piece." He wrote, "Keep talking. It means I'm doing exactly what I should be doing. And no amount of BS you write will ever deter this FBI from making America safe again and taking down the criminals you love."

Allegations of Unprofessional Conduct

The Atlantic's report details multiple incidents that have raised questions about Patel's professionalism and ability to lead the FBI. According to the article, Patel drinks heavily at clubs in Washington DC and Las Vegas, where he frequently spends weekends, leading to rescheduled meetings and briefings. In one alarming instance last year, when Patel was behind locked doors and unreachable, a request for "breaching equipment" – typically used by SWAT teams – was made to gain entry.

Officials expressed concerns that Patel's behavior poses a threat to public safety, particularly in the event of a domestic terrorist attack. One FBI official told The Atlantic, "We're all just waiting for the word" that Patel has been fired.

Previous Criticisms and Reports

This is not the first time Patel has faced scrutiny. He has been criticized for:

  • Prematurely announcing on social media the tracking of suspects in high-profile cases, such as the murder of Charlie Kirk and a shooting at Brown University.
  • Using a government jet to attend personal events, including watching his girlfriend sing the national anthem at a wrestling match and traveling to Milan to watch the US men's hockey team, where he chugged a beer with players after their win.

Additionally, a report last year from a group of retired and active FBI agents stated that Patel was "in over his head" and lacked the necessary understanding of the FBI's complex programs.

White House Support and Counterclaims

Despite the controversies, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt defended Patel in the report, noting that crime has plummeted to its lowest level in over a century under the current administration. She said, "Director Patel remains a critical player on the administration's law and order team."

The allegations come amid a backdrop of ongoing debates about leadership and accountability within US federal agencies, highlighting tensions between public officials and media scrutiny.
