Residents in Zaporizhzhia were confronted with harrowing scenes as they passed a large crater and damaged vehicles near an apartment building following a Russian missile strike. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as targeting a residential area devoid of military objectives. He vowed a firm response, stating on social media, "We will respond fairly to Russia for this and other similar attacks." The assault in Zaporizhzhia was part of a broader offensive that also hit the southern port city of Odesa and the central city of Kryvyi Rih, with officials reporting that four individuals, including two children, required medical attention after the overnight strikes.
Peace Talks Face Major Hurdles Over Territorial Disputes
As preparations for new peace negotiations advance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has underscored the complexity of resolving the territorial issue of Donetsk, describing it as "very difficult" to settle. During a US Senate foreign relations committee hearing, Rubio noted that while efforts have narrowed the focus to this central challenge, it remains a significant obstacle. He indicated that the US might participate in the upcoming talks, albeit in a more limited capacity compared to previous sessions involving envoys from the Trump administration.
Energy Infrastructure Under Siege as Winter Bites
Andriy Gerus, head of the Ukrainian parliament's energy committee, warned that the coming weeks will be particularly arduous for Ukrainians due to plummeting temperatures and intensified Russian attacks on the energy grid. These assaults have already left millions without electricity and heating. Gerus expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that relief may come in about three weeks with anticipated warmer weather and increased solar power generation from longer daylight hours.
Odesa Suffers Escalated Strikes in Black Sea Conflict
Reporting from Odesa, journalist Peter Beaumont highlighted a sharp increase in Russian strikes on the city in recent months, as hostilities in the Black Sea region have reignited after a period of stalemate. A major attack on 13 December, involving 160 drones and missiles targeting energy facilities, caused prolonged outages of water and electricity, initiating a phase of near-daily assaults that continue to disrupt civilian life.
Ukraine Calls for Stronger Sanctions Enforcement
During a visit to Berlin, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, the Ukrainian presidency's special representative for sanctions, urged the European Union to take decisive action against Russia's "shadow fleet" of oil tankers used to circumvent international sanctions. He pointed to US seizures of Venezuela-linked tankers as a model for "physical" measures. Vlasiuk also emphasised the need to address western components found in Russian weaponry, citing this as evidence of ongoing sanctions evasion. He argued that only increased pressure on Moscow could facilitate negotiations to end the war, noting that the volume of oil transported by the shadow fleet in 2025 remained consistent with previous levels.
