Croydon Woman Sentenced to Over a Decade for People Smuggling Operation

A Vietnamese national residing in Croydon has been handed a prison sentence exceeding ten years for her role in a sophisticated people smuggling network that facilitated the illegal entry of hundreds of migrants into the United Kingdom. Hoang Nguyen, aged 25, operated from her home in Heathfield Road, Croydon, as part of an international crime group with operations spanning across Europe.

Social Media Advertising and Dangerous Crossings

Hoang Nguyen and her associate, 36-year-old Hop Nguyen from Leicester, blatantly advertised their illicit services on Facebook after they themselves arrived in the UK illegally in 2023. The pair were integral to a wider criminal organization that arranged perilous small boat crossings from France, charging migrants less than £3,000 per person. Their advertisements, written in Vietnamese, promoted "Fast, Convenient – Prestigious" services to reach the UK, using coded language like "44" for the country.

These posts included contact details for Zalo, a Vietnamese messaging application similar to WhatsApp, where arrangements and costs were finalized. The operation not only organized the crossings but also assisted migrants in disappearing into local Vietnamese communities after they claimed asylum, further complicating enforcement efforts.

Substantial Profits and Legal Consequences

Between January 2023 and April 2024, the criminal enterprise generated an estimated £750,000 from this illegal activity. Ledgers recovered from properties in Leicester and South Croydon documented payments linked to 250 individuals, highlighting the scale of the operation. Upon her arrest in April 2024, authorities seized more than £8,000 from Hoang Nguyen's residence.

Both Hoang and Hop Nguyen pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration in August 2024. At Croydon Crown Court, Hoang received a sentence of 10 years and six months imprisonment, while Hop was handed a 12-year term. The court also issued deportation orders against them. Hoang's live-in partner, Thuan Sy Tran, aged 26, is currently awaiting extradition to France in connection with the case.

National Crime Agency's Stern Warning

NCA Branch Commander Saju Sasikumar emphasized the dangers posed by such operations, stating, "This group used social media to advertise small boat crossings for migrants, claiming cheap prices and urgency to entice people looking for a new life. These crossings are extremely dangerous and the defendants had no interest in the safety of those making the journey aside from ensuring they received their payment and made significant profits."

He further noted that migrants entering via such high-risk, clandestine methods become vulnerable to exploitation or debt bondage. The NCA remains committed to dismantling organized immigration crime, targeting smugglers at every stage and removing social media content that promotes these illegal activities.

This sentencing follows the recent imprisonment of Ramal Briem, who received over ten years for his involvement in the same international crime group, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat people smuggling networks operating across Europe.
