Balham McDonald's Secures 24/7 Operating Licence After Council Approval
Wandsworth Council has granted approval for a McDonald's restaurant in Balham, South West London, to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The decision, made during a licensing hearing on March 24, 2026, follows an application by branch owner Inspire Restaurants Ltd to extend the restaurant's hours. Previously, the establishment was permitted to stay open until 2am from Sunday to Thursday and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Job Creation and Staff Benefits Cited as Key Reasons for Change
According to representatives from Inspire Restaurants, the move to a 24/7 schedule is expected to generate new employment opportunities and improve working conditions for existing staff. Barrister Constanze Bell, speaking on behalf of the company, emphasized that the changes would facilitate an easier shift pattern for employees and cater to the needs of shift workers in the area. "I'm happy to report that it will improve the position of people who work there. It will allow for the creation of more jobs," Ms. Bell stated during the hearing.
Council Dismisses Antisocial Behavior Concerns Due to Lack of Evidence
Despite objections raised about potential increases in antisocial behavior, noise, and litter, the council's Licensing Committee found no substantial evidence to support these claims. In a report, the committee noted that there had been no known issues with behavior at the premises and no representations from responsible authorities. The application was deemed "acceptable," with the committee concluding that the objection provided no concrete evidence to justify the concerns.
Security Measures and Community Impact Highlighted in Defense
Ms. Bell further argued that the McDonald's branch has not experienced any existing antisocial behavior problems and is equipped with security staff to manage any potential incidents. She assured that the extended hours would not disrupt the community, stating, "It will in no way create any sort of antisocial disturbance, in fact I imagine for most people they won't really notice much change at all... and an existing well-run establishment will be able to make the most of sensible trading conditions and continue to contribute to the community."
The approval marks a significant shift for the Balham location, aligning it with other 24/7 fast-food outlets in London and reflecting broader trends in the hospitality sector aimed at accommodating diverse work schedules and boosting local economies.
