In a heartwarming festive surprise, the Princess of Wales and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, showcased their musical talents with a piano duet for this year's Christmas Eve television broadcast.
A Special Musical Moment for Christmas
The touching mother-daughter performance opened the Princess's annual 'Together at Christmas' carol service, which was televised on Wednesday evening. The pair recorded their segment last week in the Inner Hall at Windsor Castle, choosing to play 'Holm Sound' by Scottish composer Erland Cooper—a piece they reportedly enjoy practising together at home.
Cooper, whose work is inspired by nature and human connection, was personally invited to Windsor to observe the filming. A palace spokesperson revealed that 'their Royal Highnesses were delighted to be joined on the day by Erland who was able to give them some guidance between takes'. Notably, the composer wrote the composition for his own mother, who is also named Charlotte.
The Fifth Annual Together at Christmas Service
The main carol service itself was recorded earlier in the month, on 5 December at Westminster Abbey. The Prince and Princess of Wales were joined by their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—for the event, which has become a cherished festive tradition for Kate.
This year marked the fifth iteration of the service, which saw a congregation of 1,600 people gather. The event serves as an opportunity to bring together representatives from the various charitable causes supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales. The overriding theme for this year's service was the importance of love.
In a letter to the congregation, the Princess of Wales reflected on the significance of 'simple acts of care which might seem small', particularly during times when life can feel fragmented or uncertain.
A Growing Festive Tradition
Prince William also addressed the gathered guests during the service. This is not the first time Princess Kate has incorporated a piano performance into the event; in 2021, she played alongside singer Tom Walker at Westminster Abbey.
The surprise duet with her young daughter, however, adds a new and deeply personal layer to this growing royal Christmas tradition, offering the public a rare glimpse into the family's private musical moments.
