The United States is grappling with another shocking act of gun violence, this time targeting the prestigious White House Correspondents' dinner. Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, has been charged with two firearm-related offenses after allegedly opening fire near the ballroom where former President Donald Trump and other high-ranking officials were dining.
Who Is Cole Tomas Allen?
Allen is believed to be a teacher from California. Social media posts indicate he was named 'Teacher of the Month' in December 2024 by C2 Education, a national private test-preparation and tutoring service. His LinkedIn profile describes him as a 'mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth.' He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the California Institute of Technology and California State University.
The Incident
Police report that Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. The shooting occurred just outside the vast ballroom housing thousands of dinner guests, disrupting the annual event honoring journalism and the First Amendment. Trump later stated that Allen appeared to be a 'lone wolf,' a sentiment echoed by law enforcement. 'They seem to think he's a lone wolf, and I feel that too,' Trump said.
Security Concerns
DC Metro Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll confirmed that investigators believe Allen was staying at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner took place. 'We have secured a room here in the hotel, and again, we'll go through the appropriate procedures to determine what was inside there,' Carroll said. The fact that an armed individual could approach the ballroom has raised serious questions about security measures at an event attended by senior US government officials each year.
Response and Charges
Video posted by Trump shows the suspect running past security barricades as Secret Service agents rushed toward him. One officer was shot in a bullet-resistant vest but is recovering. The gunman was tackled to the ground and sustained no injuries, though he was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Allen faces two firearm-related charges, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. He had no prior criminal record and had not raised any red flags for law enforcement in Washington DC.
Trump expressed hope that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days. The investigation continues as authorities search for a motive.
