A 34-year-old man has been arrested after a car ploughed into five pedestrians in Ealing, West London, on Saturday afternoon. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the driver was detained on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder. The incident occurred at 2:29pm on Ealing Broadway, near an M&S store.
Arrest and Investigation
The vehicle did not stop at the scene but was located a short time later in nearby Grange Park, where the driver, a Somalia-born British man, was arrested. Although police liaised with Counter Terrorism officers, the incident is not being treated as terrorist-related. A Met Police spokesperson said: 'Due to the nature of the incident, local officers were in contact with officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London as they conducted their initial enquiries. While investigators are keeping an open mind as to any potential motive, the incident is not being treated as terrorism.'
Injuries and Emergency Response
Two pedestrians were treated at the scene outside M&S, while three were taken to hospital. None suffered life-threatening or life-changing injuries, but one person was rushed to a major trauma centre. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 2.29pm today to reports of a road traffic collision in Ealing Broadway, W5. We sent a number of resources, including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, a volunteer emergency responder crew, and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated three patients at the scene and took one of them to a major trauma centre by road as a priority. The other two patients were taken to a local hospital.'
Witness Accounts
A witness who filmed the emergency response shared a video on X, describing the scene as 'looked serious'. They added: 'There’s a car with some damage to its rear bumper. One person has been picked up and put into an ambulance, and there’s two people lying on the floor.' Alexander Stafford, a former councillor for Ealing Broadway from 2014 to 2021, posted: 'Absolutely horrific news from Ealing Broadway – as a councillor I used to represent this area and used to work in that very M&S. Praying for a speedy recovery for all the injured.'
Road Closures and Appeal
The Broadway remains closed in both directions between High Street and Spring Bridge Road, with several bus routes diverted. Police said closures could 'remain in place for some time'. Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 4607/27JUN.
