Lady Mayor: 'Lawless London' Narrative Risks Global Deals

Lady Mayor of the City of London Susan Langley has warned that a narrative portraying London as "lawless" and dangerous is threatening vital global trade deals, particularly with India. Speaking ahead of her visit to New Delhi and Mumbai, Langley emphasized that misperceptions fueled by disinformation could undermine the UK's position as a leading global financial hub.

Misperceptions vs. Reality

Langley described London as "one of the world’s safest, most open and most globally connected cities," whose success is deeply intertwined with India's economic rise. However, she noted that short video clips and false headlines often travel faster than facts, creating a distorted image that risks unsettling the UK's global standing. Research indicates that negative narratives about London have increased by 150-200% in two years, driven by algorithm-driven content.

Economic Strength

Despite these perceptions, London remains a world-leading hub. The UK ranks second globally as a destination for investment in PwC’s latest CEO survey. London's insurance market has doubled in size over the past decade to $187bn, larger than its global competitors combined. The UK is also Europe’s most active capital-raising market and home to the continent's largest tech ecosystem, with more unicorns than any other European country.

India-UK Trade Partnership

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement, signed in July 2025, is one of the most ambitious pacts ever agreed by India. Langley highlighted that India is the UK’s second-largest source of foreign direct investment, with over 1,100 Indian-owned companies operating in the UK and nearly 800 British companies in India, supporting over 600,000 jobs. She stressed that this deal should be "the floor – not the ceiling – of our aspirations."

Need for Proactive Storytelling

Langley urged the UK to actively counter disinformation by telling its own story clearly and consistently. "If we do not tell our story clearly and consistently, others will fill the space with distortion," she said. Her upcoming visit to India aims to reassure business leaders, investors, and innovators that London remains open and welcoming, encouraging Indian startups and young people to see the UK as a destination for growth and opportunity.
