Former Radio 1 DJ Appears in Court on Serious Sexual Offence Charges
Tim Westwood, the former BBC Radio 1 disc jockey, has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court to face multiple allegations of sexual offences against seven women.
The 68-year-old broadcaster, who recently returned to the UK from Nigeria, spoke only to confirm his personal details during Monday's hearing. Westwood has not yet been required to enter pleas to any of the charges at this early stage in the legal proceedings.
Detailed Breakdown of the Charges
The former DJ faces a total of fifteen charges spanning several decades, including:
- Four counts of rape occurring between 1996 and the 2010s at various London locations
- Nine counts of indecent assault including three alleged incidents at BBC studios during the 1990s
- Two counts of sexual assault at a Gloucestershire nightclub and London music festival
Specific allegations include a rape charge relating to an incident at a London hotel in 1996, and multiple indecent assaults dating back to the 1980s. The court heard that Westwood has voluntarily attended five police interviews since the investigation began.
Bail Conditions and Next Court Date
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring granted bail with the specific condition that Westwood must not contact any prosecution witnesses. The case has been transferred to Southwark Crown Court where Westwood is scheduled to appear on 8th December.
Throughout the investigation, Westwood has consistently denied all allegations of sexual misconduct made against him. The former Capital Radio and BBC presenter began his broadcasting career in local radio before joining Capital Radio in the late 1980s.
After moving to the BBC in 1994, Westwood worked on Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra for nearly two decades before leaving in 2013. He subsequently joined Capital Xtra, hosting the Saturday show where he was known as "The Big Dawg" until his departure from the station in 2022.
