Cambridgeshire communities remain on edge as police intensify their investigation into Wednesday's brutal double stabbing at Huntingdon railway station, with detectives now examining potential links to multiple violent incidents across the county.
The attack, which occurred during the evening rush hour, left two men with serious injuries after a confrontation near the station's ticket office. Both victims were rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where they continue to receive treatment for what authorities describe as life-changing injuries.
County-Wide Pattern Emerges
Detective Chief Superintendent John Massey revealed that investigators are exploring connections to at least three other serious incidents in the region:
- Wednesday morning: A serious assault on a pedestrian in St Ives
- Tuesday evening: Violent disorder involving weapons in Huntingdon town centre
- Earlier Tuesday: Another serious assault in St Neots
"We are treating these incidents as potentially linked and are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry," Massey stated, urging residents to remain vigilant while emphasising that additional patrols have been deployed across transport hubs and town centres.
Community Response and Travel Disruption
The attack caused significant disruption to rail services, with Great Northern and Thameslink trains bypassing Huntingdon station for several hours during the police investigation. While services have resumed, commuters experienced widespread delays during one of the busiest travel periods.
Local business owners and residents expressed shock at the violence occurring in what many describe as typically quiet market towns. "You don't expect this kind of thing here," said one shopkeeper near the station. "It's left everyone feeling uneasy."
British Transport Police have joined the investigation, working alongside Cambridgeshire Constabulary to review CCTV footage and gather witness statements from what Massey described as "a number of people present during the incident."
