British Army Veteran Martin Chadburn Dies Following Hull City Centre Assault
Tributes are flooding in for British Army veteran Martin Chadburn, 53, who tragically lost his life after a serious assault in Hull city centre. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 19 April, when Mr Chadburn sustained a life-threatening head injury and was rushed to hospital.
Five Arrested in Connection with Veteran's Death
Police have arrested five individuals in connection with what they describe as a murder investigation. Those detained include three women aged 20, 20, and 21, along with two men aged 27 and 34, all currently in police custody. Additionally, a 49-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on the same day remains on conditional bail.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Leanne Murphy stated: 'This is a tragic incident in which Martin has lost his life, and our deepest condolences are with his family, loved ones and colleagues.' She confirmed that an increased police presence will be visible in the area as extensive enquiries continue.
'Happy-Go-Lucky' Veteran Remembered for Charity Work
Martin Chadburn, described by family as a 'happy-go-lucky' man, was known for his dedicated service to veteran charity Hull 4 Heroes. Having served nine years in the British Army, he became a prolific fundraiser, undertaking challenging mountain climbs to support the organization where he first volunteered and later worked as an employee.
His nephew Lee shared on Facebook: 'I'm devastated to say my uncle Martin Chadburn has sadly lost his life today after he was brutally attacked... He served his country and had contributed from the start at Hull for Heroes doing unbelievable charity work.'
Charity Leader Expresses Profound Shock
Paul Matson, CEO of Hull 4 Heroes, expressed being 'profoundly shocked and saddened' by Martin's death. 'Martin embodied the spirit and values of the charity,' Matson said. 'He was the type of person who would drop everything to help anyone and made a real difference to many veterans' lives.'
Matson urged the public to allow police the necessary time and space for their investigation, noting that seeking justice through proper channels is what Martin would have wanted.
Political Figure Recalls Veteran's Community Impact
Emma Hardy, MP for Hull West, recalled working closely with Martin on the 'Postcards for Veterans' project. 'Martin was great with children, answering their questions about army experience with sensitivity and honesty,' she said. 'He was a lovely man, and I had great admiration and respect for him.'
The community remains in mourning as police continue their investigation, appealing for any information that could assist in bringing clarity to this devastating incident.
