A teenage boy has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. The local community has been left reeling by the incident, which occurred on Monday evening.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were called by the ambulance service to a property in the town just after 6pm on Monday. The first officer arrived at the scene at 6.12pm. In a swift development, a teenage boy was arrested in the nearby area of Worle at 6.19pm. He remains in police custody for questioning.

The young girl's family were informed of her death on Monday night. Formal identification and a post-mortem examination are yet to be completed as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Superintendent Jen Appleford expressed the force's profound sympathy, stating: "We know the whole of Weston-super-Mare will be distraught and shocked to learn of this utterly dreadful news. It is impossible for us to adequately put into words the pain and anguish they are feeling right now."

She confirmed that the girl's family are being supported by a specially trained officer. Appleford added: "We have no doubt the community will come together as one in response to this tragedy."

A police cordon remains in place at the property on Lime Close while forensic examinations and house-to-house inquiries are conducted. Investigators are working to establish the full facts of the case.

Superintendent Appleford sought to reassure local residents: "There will be an increased police presence in the area in the coming days, and we urge anyone with concerns to please speak to us. However, we’d like to reassure people we are not aware of there being any increased risk to public safety."
