Serial Abuser Bruce Buchanan Handed Life Sentence for Highland Attacks Spanning Decades
Bruce Buchanan, a 61-year-old man from the Scottish Highlands, has been sentenced to an order for lifelong restriction (OLR) for a brutal campaign of violence against three women that lasted over three decades. The High Court in Edinburgh delivered the verdict on Monday, 30 March 2026, following his conviction for seven offences, including multiple rapes and assaults.
Decades of Abuse and Violence Uncovered
Buchanan's offending began in June 1986 and continued until June 2017, during which he subjected his victims to horrific acts of violence. He raped one woman three times, throttling her and forcing his hand into her mouth during one attack. In another incident, he threatened her with a knife and pressed his thumbs into her eyes while sitting on her. The court heard how he also verbally and physically abused this victim at various addresses in the Highlands.
Jurors were presented with evidence detailing attacks on two other women. Buchanan grabbed one woman by the nose, compressed it while making threats, and forced her to the ground. In an assault on a third victim, he pinned her arms behind her back and gripped her throat, restricting her breathing to the point where she feared for her life.
Conviction and Sentencing Details
Despite denying any wrongdoing, Buchanan was found guilty of four assaults, two rapes, and one count of rape and assault to severe injury and danger of life. Judge Lord Fairley emphasized the most troubling aspect of the case: Buchanan's propensity to choke or asphyxiate his victims during the violence. The judge highlighted a risk assessment that described Buchanan as having problems with emotional management, chronic low self-esteem, jealousy, paranoia, and a need to control those close to him.
The assessment noted that his patterns of behavior are fixed, his thinking inflexible, and his insight limited, with no internal desire to change. As a result, Buchanan was sentenced to an OLR, a measure reserved for the most serious cases in Scotland that do not involve murder, with a minimum of five years in jail. If ever released, he will remain under a lifelong risk management plan.
Additional Penalties and Community Impact
In addition to the OLR, Buchanan has been banned from contacting the three women and has been added to the sex offenders' register for life. This case underscores the severe consequences of long-term abuse and the justice system's commitment to protecting victims from further harm. The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing violent behavior and supporting survivors in the community.
