London Robbers Steal £50,000 in Mobile Phones from Shopping Centre in Terrifying Ordeal

Two men from London are currently at large after failing to attend court following a brazen robbery where they stole £50,000 worth of mobile phones and electrical devices from a shopping centre. The incident, described by police as a terrifying ordeal for staff, occurred at The Forum shopping centre in Sittingbourne, Kent, in October 2024.

Details of the Robbery and Arrests

Dobre Vasile-Iosif, aged 19 from Harrow Road, and Valentin Ciuraru, aged 25 from Central Park Road, forced employees at the store to open a high-value safe containing the expensive devices. After securing the goods, the pair fled the scene in a waiting vehicle along with co-conspirator Ionut Calin, aged 23 from Gillingham, heading towards Rainham.

In a swift response, store staff managed to track one of the stolen mobile phones to Gillingham Park, located more than 11 miles away from the crime scene. Kent Police officers were dispatched and caught the men as they emerged from some bushes, where they also located the stolen items. All three individuals were arrested and charged with robbery.

Court Proceedings and Sentences

Ionut Calin pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court on March 9 and has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail for his role in the heist. However, Vasile-Iosif and Ciuraru were bailed pending trial and were subsequently found guilty in their absence after failing to attend court. Warrants have now been issued for their arrests as they remain at large.

Police Statement on the Incident

Detective Constable Scott Bittlestone of Kent Police commented on the case, stating, The staff at the store were put through a terrifying ordeal but thanks to their swift actions and the coordinated response from our officers, we were able to bring Calin to justice and recover thousands of pounds’ worth of stolen goods. He emphasized the importance of the staff's quick thinking in tracking the devices, which led to the successful recovery of the items and the arrest of the perpetrators.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about organised theft in retail environments, particularly targeting high-value electronics. Authorities continue to investigate the whereabouts of the two fugitives while urging the public to report any sightings to assist in their apprehension.
