Man Admits Guilt in Oban Ambulance Death Case

A young man has admitted guilt in a tragic case where a father-of-two was pushed into the path of an ambulance, leading to his death in Oban, Argyll and Bute.

Robert Bromell, aged 39, was fatally struck by an emergency vehicle in the early hours of 6 September 2023. The incident occurred at Corran Esplanade on the A85 in Oban. Mr Bromell sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he sadly passed away the following day.

Legal Proceedings and Guilty Plea

Following a thorough investigation by Police Scotland, Lewis Budge, 22, was arrested and charged in connection with the death. Budge pleaded guilty to culpable homicide at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, 21 January 2026. Sentencing has been deferred to a later date.

Community Impact and Family Tributes

Inspector Gerry Shovlin described the crime as "shocking and senseless", emphasising that violence of this nature is unacceptable in communities. He expressed hope that the guilty plea might offer some comfort to the bereaved family and friends.

Mr Bromell's family paid a heartfelt tribute, remembering him for his "cheeky smile and funny character". Known affectionately as "Hogan", he was described as a much-loved father who always had a smile and a joke to share. The family stated, "It is a devastating loss and he will be missed by everyone that knew him. As a family we are devastated and truly heartbroken right now. Life will not be the same without him."
