Trump predicts Starmer resignation over immigration and energy failures
Trump: Starmer will resign over immigration, energy

Donald Trump has predicted that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign, accusing him of failing "badly" on immigration and energy policy. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT."

Mounting pressure on Starmer

Pressure has been building on Starmer to step aside, with senior cabinet figures including Yvette Cooper reportedly advising him to leave. Over 100 Labour MPs—nearly a quarter of the party's parliamentary representation—have called for his resignation. Some of these MPs had signed a letter against a leadership contest just last month.

Trump's criticism of North Sea oil policy

Trump has repeatedly slammed Starmer for blocking oil drilling in the North Sea, recently stating that Europe is "desperate" for oil that is not flowing because the "United Kingdom refuses to open North Sea Oil." In November 2025, Trump urged Starmer to deploy the army along the coast, warning that Britain "won't have a country left" unless illegal migrants are deported.

Starmer's potential exit plan

Starmer is believed to have consulted with his wife, Victoria, and his children about his future. According to sources, he may be preparing to announce an exit plan as early as Monday. Until now, allies of the PM and No 10 had insisted he would fight any leadership challenge. If Starmer resigns, Britain will have its seventh prime minister in 10 years.

Warnings for potential successor

Former Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned Andy Burnham, a potential successor, not to become leader "by default." Writing in the Sunday Times, Sunak said Burnham would not have more power than on his first day, and that being a "better communicator" would not be enough. Sunak emphasized the need for a "clear and achievable plan" for the opening hours of a premiership.

Labour grandees have also spoken out. Former home secretary Alan Johnson said Starmer should step aside, and Lord Falconer stated that Starmer has "no authority" because it is assumed he will be replaced by Burnham.

Starmer's recent defiance

On Friday, in the immediate aftermath of Burnham winning the Makerfield by-election, Starmer vowed not to walk away from his post. However, mounting pressure over the weekend has intensified calls for his resignation.
