Melbourne Teenager Faces 52 Charges in Antisemitic Attack Spree
Victoria Police have charged a 13-year-old Melbourne girl with a staggering 52 offenses following a series of alleged antisemitic attacks and dangerous driving incidents involving stolen vehicles. The teenager, from the Bayside area, is accused of participating in multiple reckless acts that targeted members of the Jewish community and endangered public safety over several days last week.
Alleged Antisemitic Incidents and Erratic Driving
According to police statements released on Tuesday, the girl and two other teenage girls were allegedly seen driving a stolen black Hyundai sedan through the southeastern suburbs of Hampton, Ripponlea, and Caulfield. On March 25, the group reportedly shouted "offensive, antisemitic remarks" and threw eggs at pedestrians in what authorities describe as hate-based behavior.
The situation escalated dramatically three days later when, around 7 p.m. on March 28, the 13-year-old allegedly swerved the stolen car directly toward Jewish families crossing the intersection of Hotham Street and Glen Eira Road in Ripponlea. Police confirmed that the families "narrowly escaped being struck by the car" and fortunately sustained no physical injuries. The vehicle, which had been stolen from a gym in Caulfield, fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Broader Pattern of Criminal Activity
Investigators revealed that this was not an isolated event. Police will allege the same teenager was involved in several other incidents featuring erratic driving in stolen cars throughout the area. The series of crimes appears to be part of a broader pattern of juvenile delinquency and vehicle theft that has concerned local authorities.
Additional incidents reported by police include:
- A hit-and-run in Brighton on Monday night where a stolen silver SUV allegedly attempted to strike a cyclist with its passenger door before crashing into the rear of the bicycle. The 45-year-old male cyclist was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
- An early Tuesday morning incident in Elwood where teenagers in a stolen white Volkswagen Golf allegedly rammed an e-scooter carrying two people. Both riders fell from the scooter as it crashed into a parked vehicle, though they required no medical attention. When victims and a passerby began filming the offending vehicle, one teenager allegedly threatened them.
Police Pursuit and Arrests
The police pursuit of the stolen Volkswagen Golf involved a dramatic chase across multiple major roadways. The driver allegedly traveled across a footpath before accelerating at high speed along the Nepean Highway, Dingley Bypass, EastLink, Princes Highway, and Monash Freeway. Police successfully deployed stop sticks on Dandenong Road in East Malvern, ultimately bringing the vehicle to a halt on Waverley Road.
Three female occupants were arrested at the scene and taken into custody. The 13-year-old Bayside girl now faces numerous charges including:
- Reckless conduct endangering serious injury
- Multiple counts of theft
- Multiple counts of theft of motor vehicle
- Burglary
- Handling stolen goods
- Threatening physical harm or property damage on ground of a protected attribute
She has been remanded to appear at a children's court. Two other girls—another 13-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from the Cardinia area—were charged with theft of motor vehicle and handling stolen goods. They have been bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.
Police Condemn Hate-Based Behavior
Victoria Police emphasized their zero-tolerance approach to hate crimes in their official statement. "There is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behavior and such activity will not be tolerated," authorities declared. Investigations into the series of incidents remain ongoing as police work to address what appears to be a concerning trend of juvenile offenses involving stolen vehicles and targeted attacks.
The case has drawn significant attention to issues of youth crime, vehicle theft, and antisemitism in Melbourne's southeastern suburbs. Community leaders and law enforcement officials are urging vigilance and cooperation as they work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
