Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 66-year-old man who was punched outside a village pub in Leicestershire.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries
David Darke passed away in hospital on Saturday, 27 December 2025, six days after the incident near The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna. The assault occurred on the evening of Sunday, 21 December.
Officers from Leicestershire Police were called to the scene at approximately 9.45pm. The force confirmed that the victim was outside the establishment when he was struck, sustaining a serious head injury.
Suspect Re-Arrested on Murder Suspicion
In a significant development, a 36-year-old man originally detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. The suspect remains in custody as inquiries intensify.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, of the East Midlands Special Operation Murder Investigation Team, provided an update on the case. "The initial investigation resulted in us identifying several witnesses and examining CCTV from the area," he stated.
"Those inquiries will continue and the suspect will be re-interviewed by detectives. It is an extremely difficult time for Mr Darke's family and specialist officers are supporting them."
