Nursery Worker Sentenced to 30 Years for Horrific Abuse of Toddlers in Bristol

Nathan Bennett, a 30-year-old nursery worker from Corston near Bath, has been handed a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of a series of sexual offences against five young boys, aged between two and three years old. The crimes occurred at the Partou King Street Nursery in Bristol, where Bennett was employed, and have been described by prosecutors as "every parent's nightmare."

Details of the Offences and Trial

Bennett was found guilty last month on multiple charges, including two counts of raping a child under 13, four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, and two charges of sexual assault by penetration. In addition, he had previously pleaded guilty to thirteen other offences related to four of the victims, all aged two at the time. The trial at Bristol Crown Court, which lasted four days in February, revealed disturbing details about Bennett's behavior, including reports from staff that he would sit children on his lap for extended periods, wear trousers with holes in the crotch area, and exhibit a "territorial" attitude over certain toddlers and their parents.

Discovery and Arrest

Concerns were first raised in February 2025 after Bennett's manager reviewed CCTV footage following complaints from parents and staff about his conduct. The footage showed Bennett putting his hands down the trousers of a child, leading to his immediate dismissal and subsequent arrest by Avon and Somerset Police. The nursery closed in December 2025, amid the ongoing investigation.

Impact on Families and Community

During the trial, emotional testimony was provided by the parents of the victims. One parent expressed shock and horror, stating, "You think that this can only happen in TV shows and films and to other people. I never thought that I would be in a situation where my children had been looked after by someone who was actively taking part in such horrific things. I felt sick and ill." Another parent described how her son demonstrated the abuse he had suffered at the nursery, highlighting the profound trauma inflicted on the young victims.

Sentencing and Aftermath

Bennett was sentenced to 30 years in custody, with a minimum of 24 years to be served before he is eligible for release, followed by six years on licence. Following the sentencing, video footage of Bennett being questioned by police was released, in which he denied becoming a nursery worker to gain sexual access to children but admitted finding it easier to be around children "in a professional way." Investigating officer DC Bethany Cook commended the families for their strength, noting that the investigation was "deeply challenging and distressing for all concerned."

This case underscores the critical importance of vigilance and robust safeguarding measures in childcare settings, as communities grapple with the aftermath of such a devastating breach of trust.
