Parents Sentenced to Life for Murdering 13-Week-Old Son

A couple has been handed life sentences for the murder of their 13-week-old baby son, who died from a fractured skull and multiple injuries after repeated assaults. Klevi and Nivalda Pirjani were found guilty of killing baby Miguel in November 2024, with the court hearing they referred to him as a "monster" and showed a lack of remorse.

Brutal Assaults and Fatal Injuries

Baby Miguel was found unresponsive in the couple's home on Percy Road, Wirral, after Klevi Pirjani called emergency services. Medical examinations revealed severe bruising, a skull fissure, bleeding on the brain, and fractures to his right collarbone, left upper arm, and left shin. These injuries, of varying ages, indicated ongoing abuse prior to his death.

Doctors placed Miguel on life support, but he died on November 29, 2024, after artificial ventilation was removed. The court heard that the parents blamed each other for the fatal assault, with Nivalda alleging Klevi "lost control" and headbutted and kicked the infant.

Sentencing and Judicial Condemnation

Mr Justice Baker sentenced Nivalda Pirjani to life with a minimum term of 15 years and three months, while Klevi Pirjani received a life sentence with a minimum of 19 years. The judge criticized the couple for not disclosing which parent delivered the final blow, describing their relationship as "warped" and prioritizing themselves over their defenseless son.

During the trial, it was noted that Klevi referred to Miguel as "it" in a 999 call, raising questions about his attitude toward the child. Nivalda provided a prepared statement accusing Klevi of violence but did not blame him for the injuries, while Klevi denied any harm, claiming no concerns were raised by healthcare professionals.

Investigation and Community Impact

Detective Inspector Holly Chance of Merseyside Police stated the case was "profoundly distressing" for all involved, emphasizing that the sentencing reflects the gravity of the offences. She highlighted the message that violence against vulnerable individuals will be met with full legal consequences.

The tragic death of Miguel underscores broader issues of child protection and parental accountability, with the justice system aiming to deter similar acts through severe penalties.
