Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has personally hailed the "humble" bravery of a man who risked his life to disarm an attacker during the Bondi Junction tragedy, during a hospital visit to the recovering hero.
A Courageous Act in the Face of Danger
Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-born shopkeeper, was shot twice after confronting one of the alleged assailants at Westfield Bondi Junction on Sunday evening. His decisive actions are credited with saving multiple lives during the violent incident.
From his bed at St George Hospital in Sydney's south, where he underwent surgery for his wounds, al-Ahmed has been praised as representing the very best of Australia. In a video shared by Türkiye's TRT World on Tuesday, he was seen being wheeled through the hospital, expressing gratitude and asking for prayers.
Prime Minister's Tribute to an 'Inspiration'
During a half-hour visit on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Albanese spoke with al-Ahmed and his parents, who had travelled from Syria. "Ahmed al-Ahmed represents the best of our country," Albanese stated emphatically after the meeting. "His bravery is an inspiration for all Australians. He is a very humble man."
The PM recounted al-Ahmed's simple explanation for being at the scene: "He was trying to get a cup of coffee, simple as that, and found himself at a moment where people were being shot in front of him. He decided to take action."
A Nation's Gratitude and Recognition
Albanese confirmed that al-Ahmed's heroism would be formally recognised, telling a Sydney radio station: "He is a hero and that needs to be recognised and I'm absolutely certain that we will do that." The New South Wales Premier, Chris Minns, also visited the injured man on Monday night.
Former Prime Minister John Howard added his voice to the tributes, calling al-Ahmed's intervention "the single act of greatest courage we've seen." Howard noted to Sky News, "I understand he's a Muslim. There are good people of every persuasion in this wonderful country."
In his video message, a recovering Ahmed al-Ahmed thanked supporters, saying, "I appreciate the efforts of everyone. May Allah reward you and grant you well-being. God willing, we will return to you with joy." He also spoke of the ordeal, stating, "I went through a very difficult phase, only Allah knows it," and asked for his mother's prayers.
