Teenager Receives Life Sentence for Brutal Mother Murder in Welsh Nature Reserve
An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrific murder of his mother in a Welsh nature reserve, after holding her captive for hours and reportedly boasting about the crime online. Tristan Roberts, from Prestatyn in north Wales, pleaded guilty last month at Mold Crown Court to murdering his 45-year-old mother Angela Shellis in October last year.
Four-Hour Captivity Preceded Fatal Attack
According to North Wales Police, Roberts held his mother captive inside their Prestatyn home for more than four hours before her death. During this terrifying ordeal, Roberts physically assaulted Angela while brandishing a hammer and refused to allow her to leave her bedroom. CCTV footage captured the pair leaving their home address on foot shortly before 3:20am on October 24.
After reaching the nearby Morfa Nature Park, Roberts used a hammer to attack Angela, inflicting fatal injuries. Surveillance footage later showed Roberts walking home alone before returning to the Morfa area, where investigators believe he attempted to forensically clean the murder scene. Angela's body was discovered by a member of the public in undergrowth at the nature park, having suffered significant head injuries.
Family Tribute to 'Fiercely Supportive' Mother
In a heartbreaking tribute, Angela's sister Sarah Gunther described her as "a woman whose heart, strength, and spirit shaped the lives of everyone who knew her." She continued: "She was a fantastic and fiercely supportive mum, the kind who never gave up, no matter how hard life became. She fought tirelessly for her boys, and her love for them was unbreakable."
Gunther added: "To me, she wasn't just my sister — she was my best friend. Her kindness was genuine, her laughter infectious, and her presence brought warmth into every room. Losing her has left a space that can never truly be filled."
Investigation Reveals Premeditation
Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Andrew Gibson revealed that Roberts had been planning the murder for several weeks prior to the attack. "Within hours of Angela's body being discovered, Tristan Roberts was identified and arrested," Gibson stated. "Through a thorough investigation, the Major Incident Team, supported by specialist teams, were able to piece together the final hours of Angela's life, as well as evidence the extent that Tristan Roberts had gone to, over several weeks, as he planned to kill his mother."
Gibson commended the bravery of Angela's family during the investigation, acknowledging "not just the loss of Angela in such traumatic circumstances, but also the loss of Tristan, who will now spend a considerable time in prison." He also thanked the local Prestatyn community for their assistance and patience as large areas of Morfa were cordoned off for several days during the investigation.
Life Sentence with Minimum Term
Roberts was sentenced this afternoon at Mold Crown Court to life in prison, with a minimum term of 22 and a half years before being considered for parole. Detective Superintendent Gibson concluded: "It was important that Angela remained the focal point throughout the investigation, and I hope today's sentencing allows for some closure and supports Angela's family in moving forward and towards rebuilding their lives."
The case highlights ongoing concerns about violence against women, with various campaigns continuing to address what has been described as a national emergency in gender-based violence across the United Kingdom.
