Trump's Golf Outings Accumulate $100 Million Taxpayer Bill in Just Over a Year
Donald Trump's return to the White House has followed a familiar pattern when it comes to leisure activities, with new analysis revealing his golf trips have already cost American taxpayers more than $100 million during his second term. According to calculations by HuffPost, the former president's frequent visits to golf courses have resulted in at least $101.2 million in travel and security expenses over just 14 months.
Rapid Spending Pace Exceeds First-Term Records
This substantial expenditure represents approximately two-thirds of Trump's entire first-term golf-related costs, which themselves were considerable. At the current rate, projections suggest the total could approach $300 million by the conclusion of his second presidential term. The accelerated spending pace is particularly notable given that during his initial administration, Trump required two full years to reach the $100 million threshold for golf expenses.
Trump's most recent appearance at his West Palm Beach course occurred on Saturday morning, marking his 56th visit to that location since his 2025 inauguration. This outing also represented his 110th day playing golf during his 435 days in office, meaning he has spent more than a quarter of his presidential days on the golf course.
Logistical Operations Drive Extraordinary Costs
The extraordinary expenses stem from the massive logistical operations required for presidential travel. These typically involve Air Force One flights, additional transport planes, and extensive security teams that accompany the commander-in-chief. The figures used to calculate these costs derive from a Government Accountability Office report analyzing Trump's first-term travel, with no adjustments made for inflation despite rising operational costs.
Mar-a-Lago represents the most expensive regular destination, with each visit costing approximately $3.4 million due to comprehensive security requirements along both the Atlantic coast and Intracoastal Waterway. These measures include armed boat patrols and offshore Coast Guard vessels. Other locations, while less costly, still represent significant expenditures: trips to Bedminster in New Jersey cost around $1.1 million each, while visits to Trump's Doral resort in Florida average about $2.7 million per outing.
Overseas Trip Sets Record for Single Outing
The most expensive golf-related excursion to date occurred overseas, with a summer visit to Trump's Scottish resorts costing a staggering $9.7 million. This international trip highlights how presidential leisure activities can generate extraordinary expenses when conducted far from Washington.
The White House has recently begun listing these golf outings as 'executive time' in Trump's public schedule. When questioned by journalists about what this designation entails, the press office offered a notably uninformative response: 'Executive time refers to executive time.'
Critics Decry Spending Amid Economic Challenges
Government watchdog organizations have sharply criticized the expenditures. Jordan Libowitz of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington told HuffPost: 'At a time when gas prices are spiking and Americans across the country find themselves in an ever-worsening affordability crisis, the president has burned through over $100 million in taxpayer money in order to make promotional appearances at his golf courses and hobnob with millionaires and billionaires.'
Libowitz added: 'If his goal were to help struggling Americans out, one thing he could try is stop spending their money going to his golf courses.'
Historical Context and Presidential Comparisons
The substantial spending stands in stark contrast to Trump's previous criticisms of other presidents' leisure activities. During his 2016 campaign, Trump pledged he wouldn't have time for golf because he would be too busy 'working for you,' while also criticizing Barack Obama's golf habits and later targeting Joe Biden's trips to Delaware.
These criticisms appear particularly ironic given the significant cost differences between administrations. Obama's golf outings were substantially less expensive, primarily occurring at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. Similarly, Biden's travel typically utilized smaller aircraft or Marine One helicopters rather than the larger, more costly Air Force One deployments characteristic of Trump's trips.
During his first term, Trump played golf on 293 days at his own courses, ultimately costing taxpayers $151.5 million. His second term has seen him surpass the $100 million mark much more rapidly, suggesting an acceleration in both frequency and expense of presidential leisure activities.
As the numbers continue to accumulate, what might represent an impressive score for recreational golfers has become a concerning financial total for American taxpayers already facing economic pressures.
