Police have made two arrests following the fatal stabbing of a young man on a South London street on New Year's Eve. The victim has been formally identified as 23-year-old John Onetufo from Deptford.
Arrests Made in Murder Investigation
In what detectives are calling a 'significant development', a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder earlier today, Friday, 2 January. Both remain in police custody for questioning.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 12:35pm on Wednesday, 31 December, on Grove Street in the Lewisham area. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Mr Onetufo, who had suffered a stab wound to the chest, was pronounced dead at the location.
Police 'Working Relentlessly' for Answers
Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend provided an update on the case. She confirmed her team's determined efforts in the days following the killing.
"My team has worked relentlessly over recent days to pursue every line of enquiry, and I can confirm that two arrests have now been made in connection with this tragic incident," DCI Townsend stated.
She emphasised that while the arrests mark important progress, the investigation remains ongoing as officers work to piece together the full circumstances that led to Mr Onetufo's death.
Appeal for Information and Community Sympathy
DCI Townsend extended her condolences to those affected by the loss. "I want to extend my deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends. We remain committed to finding answers and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice," she said.
The detective had previously announced that police patrols would be increased in the local area in response to the violent crime.
Officers continue to appeal to the public for information. Anyone who may have witnessed the event or has relevant details is urged to contact the police.
