UK Man Told to Prepare for Prison After Admitting to Goading American into Suicide

A UK man has been instructed to ready himself for a custodial sentence after pleading guilty to encouraging a vulnerable US citizen to commit suicide during a video call. Dylan Phelan, aged 21 and hailing from Morley in West Yorkshire, admitted to the charge of assisting the suicide of Travis Dyer, who resided in Theriot, Louisiana, on October 30, 2024.

Disturbing Details of the Case

During the call, which included two other individuals based in the United States, Mr. Dyer was actively encouraged to end his life using a shotgun, as detailed by the Crown Prosecution Service. Phelan appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to one count of assisting suicide, with the court informed that he, along with others, had urged Travis Dyer to kill himself by shooting.

The CPS revealed that Phelan had been communicating with Mr. Dyer for several months via the online platform Discord. A police investigation uncovered that this encouragement was not an isolated incident; in the months leading up to his death, Mr. Dyer faced sustained and serious pressure to self-harm from members of the online group.

Vulnerability of the Victim

Travis Dyer was known to be vulnerable and struggling with his mental health. The 21-year-old had experienced significant tragedy, having lost his mother and younger sister in a car crash a decade before his own death. A tribute from his great-grandmother expressed profound sorrow, stating, "Travis, We miss you... you were so unfortunate to have had so many tragedies in your young life. It was totally unfair for you."

Additional Charges and Legal Proceedings

In March of last year, Phelan voluntarily attended Elland Road Police Station in Leeds with his parents, where he confessed to participating in the video call. He admitted to being drawn to darker groups on Discord and acknowledged that his words played a role in the suicide. Furthermore, Phelan's phone was found to contain an indecent image of a child and other extreme pornography images.

At a hearing last month, Phelan pleaded guilty to one count of making an indecent image of a child in November 2024 and three counts of possessing extreme pornography in March 2025. Judge Robin Mairs has adjourned the case until May 22 for sentencing, granting Phelan bail until that date with the condition that he cannot possess any device capable of accessing the internet.

Prosecutor's Statement and Sentencing

Alex Johnson, a senior specialist prosecutor in the CPS Special Crime Division, commented on the case, saying, "This was a deeply disturbing case involving the exploitation of a vulnerable young man through an online platform. Dylan Phelan did not merely witness what happened - he actively participated in goading Travis Dyer to take his own life, intending that he would do so." The sentencing hearing is scheduled for the afternoon to allow Mr. Dyer's family to attend via video link, with the judge advising Phelan to prepare for custody.
