Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) has set a shed on fire in Emmerdale, with beloved family dog Monty trapped inside. The blaze is the latest in a series of fires started by the troubled youngster, who has been struggling with his emotions.
Graham's attempt to help fails
Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) had previously signed Kyle up for the cadets in a bid to provide a positive outlet for his feelings. Graham was the first to discover Kyle had been setting fire to barns on Emmerdale Farm. The boy told Graham he hated Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) for taking over his old home, and was also struggling to cope with his father's cancer diagnosis. Graham understood that Kyle was turning to fire because he didn't know how else to deal with his thoughts and emotions. He gifted Kyle a watch he had worn during his army service, but the watch has since been smashed.
Kyle seeks answers about his mother's death
In upcoming episodes, Kyle retreats to his old habits and reaches for matches again. At Home Farm, he shows up desperate for confirmation that Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) was responsible for his mother's death. Graham arrives moments later, but Kyle flees. His shaken behaviour is spotted by Cain and Moira Dingle (Jeff Hordley and Natalie J Robb), who cannot understand why Kyle seems so upset.
The fire and its aftermath
The next day, Kyle's feelings of isolation worsen as Cain loses his temper with his son and storms out. Later, Cain notices something out of the window and rushes outside. To his horror, he realises Kyle has set a shed on fire, and Monty the dog is trapped inside. Cain kicks the door down and rescues Monty, who is rushed to the vets. Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) tells the family to prepare for the worst, intensifying Kyle's guilt. Cain struggles to keep his fury in check.
Monty diagnosed with cancer
The next day, the Dingles receive more bad news as Paddy shares that Monty has cancer. Collecting the dog from the vets, Cain takes him for a walk to decide what to do. Cain realises how much he wants to help Monty but is also aware that he won't help himself following his own cancer development. The latest fire from Kyle threatens to further damage the father-son relationship between Cain and Kyle.
