Former Sprint Star Adam Gemili Issues Rallying Cry for London Athletics Revival

Former world and European champion sprinter Adam Gemili has issued a passionate call for the revitalization of athletics in the United Kingdom, with the planned renovation of Crystal Palace sports centre serving as a potential catalyst. The 32-year-old athlete, who made his Diamond League debut on the south London track as a junior, emphasized the critical need for more accessible and well-maintained facilities across the capital.

Crystal Palace: A Historic Venue in Need of Renewal

Gemili expressed deep disappointment over the current state of Crystal Palace stadium, which has fallen into disrepair in recent years despite its storied history. "It is a real shame Crystal Palace doesn't have a Diamond League anymore," said the former sprint star. "It will be nice to give that stadium a bit of love because it's super quick and we've seen some brilliant times on it."

The athlete's concerns come as London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has thrown his support behind rejuvenation plans that would bring the historic site back into regular use. With London's Olympic Stadium currently serving as the only Diamond League host in the UK, Gemili believes the Crystal Palace refurbishment could kickstart a broader return of British events to the international athletics calendar.

The Shrinking Landscape of UK Athletics Events

Gemili contrasted the current situation with the more vibrant athletics scene he experienced early in his career. "When I first came on, there was Crystal Palace, Gateshead, Birmingham, London. Now we're lucky if we get a London Diamond League," he lamented. "There needs to be a lot more athletics meets. The hunger is there, people want to see it. They just have to facilitate it."

The former champion shared poignant memories of his own introduction to elite competition at Crystal Palace. "My first Diamond League was Crystal Palace as a junior. We ran the relay and came dead last in lane one but we were just happy to be there," Gemili recalled. "I had never seen a crowd of that many people. Asafa Powell won the 100m, it's one of my best memories."

Accessibility and Community Impact

Beyond elite competition, Gemili stressed the importance of making sports facilities accessible to everyone across London. He highlighted how hire fees and other costs often create barriers to participation, particularly for young athletes from diverse backgrounds. "There is much talent. We have got all these brilliant facilities that need a bit of love," he emphasized. "People need access to those facilities, they need to be made available for people to use. Sport is such a big part of culture in this country. We have such a talented youth system and that needs to be looked after and grown."

Gemili's comments came during a visit to Larkhall Park in Stockwell, where he witnessed firsthand the positive impact of community sports initiatives. He observed a football session organized by Sports Fun 4 All, a south London charity nominated for a London Sport Award. The charity conducts 21 sessions weekly, with 16 offered completely free of charge.

Community Sports Initiatives as a Model

"It was more than I expected," Gemili said of the community program. "Seeing the way it was run, how diligent they are, everyone was very respectful. They've got a really good thing here and I really hope they can keep their funding and grow and get bigger. What they do for the community is brilliant."

The former athlete praised the approach of CEO and founder Kieran Connolly, noting that the program's value extends far beyond athletic performance. "It's not about how good they are as footballers, it's about bringing a lot of different people together as part of the local community, to play some football and learn. It's good vibes," Gemili explained. "It was brilliant chatting to Kieran, learning about how he started and how he wants to move forward."

The Broader Context of London Sports Development

London Sport, the charity behind the awards program that recognized Sports Fun 4 All, works to help all Londoners live longer, healthier, and happier lives through physical activity. The London Sport Awards, supported by the City of London Corporation, highlight the capital's unsung heroes who are helping residents lead more active lifestyles.

Gemili's advocacy comes at a crucial moment for London's sports infrastructure, with the Crystal Palace renovation representing both a practical opportunity and symbolic commitment to athletics development. His message underscores the interconnectedness of elite facilities, community access, and the overall health of British sports culture.
