Thomas Tuchel faces a selection dilemma at right-back after Reece James suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for at least the next two games, ahead of England's World Cup group-stage finale against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday night.
Tuchel's tactical adjustments
England need a win to secure top spot in their group and progress to the knockout stages. After a hard-fought draw with Ghana in Boston, Tuchel made two changes to that starting XI, and the absence of James forces at least one more alteration. The Chelsea captain's injury is a significant blow, but several options exist to cover the position.
Jarell Quansah, Trevoh Chalobah, and Ezri Konsa—who has started both previous games at centre-half—are all capable of moving to right-back. However, Djed Spence is the most likely candidate. The Tottenham full-back started at left-back against Ghana with Nico O'Reilly rested, but he could be deployed in his more natural role on the right.
Midfield fitness concerns
Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have been passed fit despite recent doubts. Rice is one booking away from a suspension and was seen limping after the Ghana draw, having managed a back injury since the start of the year. Anderson, whose move to Manchester City was finalized this week, also picked up a minor issue against Ghana. Kobbie Mainoo is waiting for his first appearance of the tournament and could be called upon if Tuchel opts to rest one of the midfielders.
Attacking options
Bukayo Saka is yet to start a game due to an Achilles injury that caused him to miss five matches for Arsenal in April. Noni Madueke has deputized in his place, but Tuchel indicated Saka is 'ready to go' after completing recent training sessions without issues. Anthony Gordon has struggled to justify a starting role, while Marcus Rashford is ready to step in. Tuchel may also consider starting Saka and Rashford alongside a change in midfield.
England cruised to a 6-1 victory the last time these two nations met, and if they can establish early control, there will be opportunities for further changes. The match kicks off at 10pm on Saturday 27 June and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX.
