Arsenal have completed their first summer signing by exercising the option to make Piero Hincapie's loan move from Bayer Leverkusen a permanent deal, paying around £35 million. The Ecuador international joined the Gunners late in last year's summer transfer window and ended his debut season as Arsenal's first-choice left-back, ahead of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori.
Hincapie's Impact at Arsenal
The 24-year-old started crucial matches in the run-in, including games against Manchester City and Burnley, and kept Calafiori on the bench for the entire Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. His performances attracted interest from Real Madrid, but Hincapie has committed his future to the Premier League champions.
Official Statement
“We are delighted to have activated the option to make Piero Hincapie’s transfer to us permanent from July 1,” read a statement on Arsenal’s official website. “Piero spent last season on loan from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and was an integral part of our Premier League-winning campaign.”
Hincapie's versatility and consistency have made him a key asset for manager Mikel Arteta, and the club acted swiftly to secure his long-term services despite external interest.
