Arsenal's highly-rated young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is edging closer to a temporary exit from the Emirates Stadium, with positive talks held over a loan move to French giants Marseille.
Breakout Star Seeks Crucial Minutes
The 18-year-old enjoyed a stellar breakout campaign last season, making 37 appearances across all competitions and finding the net nine times under Mikel Arteta. His impressive form was rewarded with a new long-term contract in August 2025.
However, game time has been severely limited this season following the summer arrivals of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke. Despite Arsenal competing on four fronts, Nwaneri has managed just 12 appearances, scoring once. His six Premier League outings have all been from the bench, with only one Champions League start to his name.
De Zerbi's Style Tempts Arsenal
According to reports, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has held productive discussions with both the player and Arteta. While a full agreement is yet to be finalised, the Gunners are reportedly attracted to the move due to De Zerbi's style of football, which could greatly benefit Nwaneri's development.
Arsenal have no intention of selling the teenager permanently, meaning any deal would be a straight loan with no option to buy in the summer. The loan would include a fee structure based on the number of appearances Nwaneri makes for the Ligue 1 side, who are currently third domestically and host Liverpool in the Champions League this week.
Arteta Backs Talent Amid Squad Competition
Mikel Arteta has previously acknowledged Nwaneri's situation, stating his lack of minutes is solely down to the immense competition within the Arsenal squad. After the youngster started in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Portsmouth this month, Arteta said: "He deserved that. Because of the strength of the squad and the players that are in the positions, he hasn't been able to play. Today he's done it, and I think he had some very good minutes."
Nwaneri himself, upon signing his new contract, expressed his excitement and versatility: "I'm a very versatile player, so I think I'm going to play anywhere across the front five, and I'm ready to do what the manager needs."
With Arsenal facing a packed schedule, including four more matches before the end of January, the club is keen to find the best solution for the player's growth. A decision on the potential loan to Marseille is expected in the coming days.
