Rio Ferdinand: Arteta Uses Ferguson's Manchester United Tactic to Chase Arsenal Title
Arteta Copies Ferguson's Tactic to Win League, Says Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand Claims Mikel Arteta Has Adopted Sir Alex Ferguson's Title-Winning Tactic

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has asserted that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is employing a strategy famously used by Sir Alex Ferguson to propel the Gunners toward their first Premier League championship in over two decades. Ferdinand insists Arteta cannot be criticized for tapping into Ferguson's proven playbook as Arsenal aims to clinch the domestic crown.

Arsenal's Commanding Lead and Upcoming Challenges

Currently, Arsenal stands as the overwhelming favorite to secure the Premier League title, holding a substantial nine-point advantage over Manchester City. However, the North London club faces a critical test next month with an away match at the Etihad Stadium. Additionally, Arsenal has played one more game than City, who recently demonstrated their strength by winning the Carabao Cup with a decisive 2-0 victory over an underperforming Arsenal side at Wembley just ten days ago.

The international break arrived at an opportune moment for Arteta, who likely welcomed the decision of several key players to withdraw from national team duties. While Eberechi Eze, absent from the League Cup final, is expected to miss Saturday's FA Cup clash against Southampton, most other injured players are anticipated to be ready for selection soon.

Ferdinand's Insight into Arteta's 'Magic'

Arsenal and the players who opted out have faced significant backlash for prioritizing club commitments so close to the upcoming World Cup. Yet, Ferdinand expresses understanding for their situation. In a recent YouTube interview, he revealed, 'Mikel Arteta has worked his magic and told them if anyone plays or anyone goes you're getting fined and they've all dropped out.'

When questioned if Arsenal supporters should be concerned about the sudden wave of injuries, Ferdinand responded, 'No. They'll all be available for selection, bar one or two.' He elaborated, 'It's definitely the manager saying listen this is the first win we could get in terms of the Premier League, we have to be ready, we need your energy, this is a friendly for your national team.'

Echoes of Sir Alex Ferguson's Approach

Ferdinand drew direct parallels to his own experiences under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where the legendary manager consistently emphasized club over country. He recounted, 'I've heard this speech from Sir Alex Ferguson so I understand it. The guys have just gone this is our priority we need to win the league.'

He described specific instances, saying, 'The game's finished we've won the game before we go away with our national team and he'll be in there going 'we've got a big game in 10 days and that's just a friendly, I don't want to see anyone playing more than 45 minutes. I don't care what you have to do to get out of it you can't play more than 45'.'

Ferdinand highlighted how Ferguson would privately instruct star players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo to withdraw from international friendlies to avoid injury, stating, 'He's protecting his interest which is Manchester United and he's Scottish so he's not got one care in the world for England.'

Thomas Tuchel Addresses England Withdrawals

Meanwhile, England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that the withdrawals of Arsenal players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka might appear suspicious to some observers. He emphasized, however, that both players were eager to participate in the friendly against Japan but were deemed unfit to risk further injury.

Tuchel explained, 'They joined, had a medical assessment, wanted desperately to play, to just get the narrative straight. Wanted desperately to be involved. But it made just no sense to take this risk. If it would have been maybe a last game of the season, we would have kept them and tried everything. But in this moment of the season, it did not make sense. The risk for making it worse was just way too big.'

He added that England was aware of the players' issues following the Carabao Cup final and expressed full confidence in their honesty, despite the optics of ten Arsenal players leaving their national teams. Tuchel noted, 'I have no reason to believe that Declan is not honest with me. I have no reason to believe Bukayo is not honest. But given the amount of Arsenal players, I understand the look.'

Rice, who Tuchel described as 70 percent fit, attempted a training session but reported discomfort, while Saka worked in the gym to demonstrate his fitness. Tuchel concluded, 'They both came. Declan was even out on the pitch. He did not come and say 'guys, I'm going home'. I heard there were camps (in the past) where players did not even show up with boots and stuff. Then it becomes, OK...but they both came.'
