Mikel Arteta Admits Declan Rice Was 'Shattered' Ahead of Arsenal's Champions League Clash
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has openly confessed that midfielder Declan Rice was "shattered" and battling illness before taking the field in Arsenal's recent Champions League match. This revelation comes as the Gunners prepare for a pivotal Premier League showdown against Manchester City this Sunday, a game that could significantly influence the title race.
Rice's Heroic Performance Despite Illness
In a post-match interview following Arsenal's goalless draw with Sporting CP on Wednesday night, Arteta detailed Rice's condition. The England international did not participate in training prior to the game due to illness and was initially deemed unfit to play. "Declan yesterday, he was shattered. He had no chance to play today, he wasn't feeling good at all today," Arteta stated.
Despite his poor health, Rice was unexpectedly handed the captain's armband and went on to play the full 90 minutes against the Portuguese champions. Arteta emphasized the midfielder's resilience, noting he played at his usual high level throughout the match. "He played 94 minutes at the level that he's done," Arteta added, highlighting the extraordinary effort from his player.
Arsenal's Champions League Success and Upcoming Fixtures
The draw secured Arsenal's place in the Champions League semi-finals, where they are set to face Atletico Madrid. Arteta attributed this achievement to the squad's unwavering commitment, despite a grueling schedule. "That is the reason why we are the only English team in the competition, because this league and this schedule takes the hell out of you, and it's very difficult to do what we've done," he explained.
Arteta praised the entire team's dedication, mentioning other players like Piero Hincapie who also gave their all. "Every single player is putting everything through the line to contribute, to give his best, and I really value that from the team," he said.
Leadership and Squad Decisions
Interestingly, Arteta revealed that the decision to make Rice captain for the match was not his own but came from the Arsenal squad. "They made a decision because Declan has earned the status and the role. The way he's taken ownership in difficult moments. He's a great leader, he's a top player for us and I love that the players take that ownership," Arteta commented, underscoring Rice's growing influence within the team.
Focus Shifts to Manchester City Showdown
With the Champions League quarter-final behind them, Arsenal now turn their attention back to domestic competition. The upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday is crucial, as it will play a significant role in determining who will be crowned champions this season. Arteta's comments about Rice's condition and the team's overall fatigue highlight the physical and mental challenges they face as they navigate this intense period.
As Arsenal continues to compete on multiple fronts, the resilience and leadership displayed by players like Declan Rice will be vital. The team's ability to overcome adversity, as seen in Rice's performance despite illness, could be a key factor in their pursuit of silverware this season.
