Marcelo Bielsa Sends Message of Support to Ben White After England Fans' Boos
Marcelo Bielsa has publicly praised Ben White in the aftermath of the Arsenal star's international return, which was marred by boos from England fans at Wembley Stadium. The former Brighton defender experienced the unusual humiliation of receiving criticism from the home crowd even after scoring to put England 1-0 up against Uruguay.
Controversial Comeback Overshadowed by Fan Reaction
White was making his first appearance for England since his controversial exit from the 2022 World Cup squad due to personal reasons, after which he made himself unavailable for selection throughout Sir Gareth Southgate's tenure as manager. Current England manager Thomas Tuchel opted to give White a second chance, resulting in an eventful 25-minute cameo.
The defender was jeered as he entered the pitch to replace Fikayo Tomori, then booed again after opening the scoring with a goal. His eventful return concluded with conceding a late penalty that allowed Federico Valverde to equalize for Uruguay, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Bielsa's Longstanding Connection and Praise
Marcelo Bielsa played a significant role in the early stages of White's career when the pair worked together at Leeds United during the Yorkshire club's promotion-winning season to the Premier League. Now coaching Uruguay, the veteran manager has maintained close observation of the versatile defender's progression and expressed delight at seeing him return to the international stage.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Bielsa stated: 'Obviously I've known him for a very long time. I was just very happy to see him and I'm very happy to see how he has developed in his career. I saw him as he was sitting there and it was an opportunity to see him and say hello.'
Teammate Support and Media Scrutiny
White also received backing from Three Lions teammate Jordan Henderson, who understands the experience of facing Wembley crowd disapproval after his own controversial move to Saudi Arabia. The midfielder offered perspective on the situation, emphasizing team solidarity and media influence on fan perceptions.
Henderson commented: 'As teammates we are always there to support. A lot of the fans will be in support of all of the players. I have been through it myself, but that is part and parcel of being an England player. Some of the fans probably don't even know why they are booing, they listen to what is being said in the media, and a lot of the time what the media says isn't true.'
He continued: 'Not many people know the ins and outs of what happened in Qatar and it is for us to deal with internally. Ben has been good since he came back in and we will support him as teammates. A few of us have been there, it is difficult when it is you, but you have to try not to take it too personally.'
The midfielder concluded by highlighting the importance of focusing on performance: 'The media can spin things in certain ways, which isn't always the truth and then fans can pick up on that and think it is the truth. It is really difficult when that happens, so it is important for us to make sure he is OK, which I am sure he is. I was delighted he got on and got a goal, which is the most important thing.'
