Brighton and Hove Albion have revealed plans to build a new stadium next to the Amex Stadium for their women's team. The proposals, which have been in development for over two years, include renderings of a 10,000-seat arena that will be the first purpose-built stadium for a women's football team in the UK and Europe.
The ground is scheduled to open in time for the 2030/31 season, marking a significant shift in attitudes towards stadiums across the Women's Super League (WSL) and the wider women's football pyramid. Currently, many women's teams play at leased stadiums, such as Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, while Chelsea recently announced that their WSL team will play all matches at Stamford Bridge next season.
Development Details
The arena, with a minimum capacity of 10,000, will be constructed on Bennett's Field and will leverage the transport links serving the men's Amex Stadium next door. A bridge will connect the two stadiums, and facilities will include recovery rooms tailored for women and changing rooms with similar considerations. For fans, the stadium will offer more women's toilets and family-friendly spaces to accommodate the different demographic found at WSL matches compared to men's games.
Brighton's Progress
Brighton and Hove Albion are enjoying an impressive season, sitting sixth in the WSL and chasing Tottenham Hotspur for fifth place. Their squad includes former Lioness Fran Kirby, and they currently play at the 6,000-capacity Broadfield Stadium in Crawley. A move to the new stadium could double their spectator capacity, reflecting the ambitious plans of manager Dario Vidosic's side. The team faces a tough run of four games, including an away match against Manchester United and home fixtures against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
