Chelsea vs Man City: Who is interim boss Calum McFarlane?
Calum McFarlane: Chelsea's interim boss for Man City clash

Chelsea will be led by an unfamiliar face for their crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City this weekend, following the sudden departure of head coach Enzo Maresca.

From Cobham to the Etihad: McFarlane's Unexpected Call-Up

With the search for Maresca's permanent successor underway, the task of preparing the first team for one of the season's toughest fixtures has fallen to Under-21 head coach Calum McFarlane. The 40-year-old will be in the dugout at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, just days after Maresca left Stamford Bridge on New Year's Day.

Maresca's exit came as a surprise to many, ending an 18-month tenure that saw Chelsea win the Club World Cup and the Conference League. However, reported tensions with the club's hierarchy and a dip in form over the past month led to the Italian's departure. The timing is far from ideal, with the match against title-chasing City looming large.

The Coaching Journey: Man City Links and Chelsea Rise

McFarlane's path to this moment is unconventional. His playing career was virtually non-existent, and he moved into coaching at a young age. His big break came in 2020 when he joined Manchester City, spending three years as an assistant manager for their Under-18 side.

It was during his time at City that McFarlane would have forged a connection with Enzo Maresca, who was also working within the club's academy before becoming Pep Guardiola's assistant. He also crossed paths with key Chelsea figures Joe Shields and Glenn van de Kraan during this period.

After a stint at Southampton managing their U18 and U21 sides, McFarlane was hired by Chelsea last summer. He has quickly made a positive impression, with the Chelsea U21s sitting fourth in Premier League 2 after winning six of their opening nine games.

Tactical Approach and the Search for a Permanent Boss

Tactically, Chelsea fans might not see a drastic shift. McFarlane has predominantly used a 4-2-3-1 or an attacking 4-3-3 formation with the youth team, mirroring Maresca's preferred setups. However, this will be his first-ever match in charge of a senior professional side.

The Blues travel to Manchester in mixed form, having won only one of their last seven league games. They sit fifth, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. City, held to a goalless draw by Sunderland on New Year's Day, are second and four points off the top.

As for the permanent vacancy, Liam Rosenior is currently the bookmakers' favourite. The former Hull City boss is impressing at Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 club also owned by Chelsea's parent company, BlueCo. Other names linked include Cesc Fabregas, Francesco Farioli, and Eddie Howe, but an appointment is not expected imminently.

For now, all eyes will be on Calum McFarlane as he steps from the training pitches of Cobham into one of the most intense spotlights in English football.
