Carragher: Fatigue Could Cost Arsenal Premier League Title

Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns that fatigue could play a decisive role in the Premier League title race, suggesting Arsenal have been unfortunate with their fixture schedule. The former Liverpool defender highlighted the demanding run of games facing Mikel Arteta's side as they juggle domestic and European commitments.

Arsenal's Title Challenge

Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, courtesy of Eberechi Eze's early strike. The win lifted them three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, though they have played one more game than Manchester City. The Gunners now turn their attention to the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

After that European clash, Arsenal face Fulham at home on Saturday, giving them minimal recovery time. Carragher believes this compact schedule could prove decisive. 'I feel Arsenal have been unfortunate,' he said. 'When you play a Champions League semi-final on Wednesday and then a league game on Tuesday, that is a big difference compared to playing Tuesday then Wednesday. You are effectively playing three games in six days rather than three in eight days. That is a massive difference at this stage of the season.'

Fatigue Concerns

Carragher noted that Arsenal's performance against Newcastle showed signs of tiredness. 'My worry watching them wasn't nerves—it has been fatigue,' he explained. 'For me, Arsenal are the best team in the league without the ball. It is difficult to score against them and to play against them. When they are at their best, they are one of the best pressing teams. But it was far too easy for Newcastle to make passes and get to the edge of the box. They could not create too much when they got there, which is a sign of the Arsenal back four, but it looked leggy to me. It was too easy for Tonali and Guimaraes to dictate the game. To see Newcastle play with ease at the Emirates was a worry and smacked of fatigue.'

Arsenal will hope to overcome these challenges as they aim to secure their first Premier League title since 2004. The upcoming fixtures against Fulham and subsequent games will test their depth and resilience.
