Jamie Carragher Blasts Liverpool's Defensive Woes After PSG Champions League Defeat

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher delivered a scathing assessment of his old club's performance following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The CBS Sports pundit singled out several players for criticism after Arne Slot's side struggled at the Parc des Princes.

Konate's 'Awful' Performance Under Fire

Carragher was particularly critical of Ibrahima Konate, describing the French defender's season as "awful" and claiming he "makes a mistake every game." The Liverpool legend suggested Konate's poor form has made life difficult for defensive partner Virgil van Dijk.

"People have criticized Van Dijk for his performances this season but I think it's been harsh," Carragher said. "I think he plays every game, the fella next to him has been awful all season and poor again tonight, Konate, makes a mistake every game, so that's not easy to play alongside."

Tactical System Exposed Against PSG

Liverpool manager Arne Slot opted for a back-five formation against the reigning Champions League holders, but Carragher believes this tactical approach backfired spectacularly. PSG dominated proceedings with goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealing a comfortable victory.

"He went about it with the back five all wrong and they were actually more open with a back five than they would be with a back four," Carragher explained. "Because they went man-to-man all over the pitch and your three centre-backs had to cover the width of the pitch."

The statistics told a grim story for Liverpool, who managed zero shots on target and just 26 percent possession. Slot admitted after the match that his team was focused on "surviving" PSG's second-half onslaught.

Van Dijk's Uncomfortable Night

Carragher expressed concern about Virgil van Dijk's performance in the unfamiliar back-three system, noting the 34-year-old defender appeared particularly uncomfortable throughout the match.

"Tonight in that back three I have never seen him so uncomfortable in a Liverpool shirt in my life," Carragher said. "I think he will be pleading with Arne Slot to never play that system ever again because he found it so tough."

Questioning Liverpool's Big-Money Signings

The former England international also turned his attention to Liverpool's expensive summer acquisitions. Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz arrived for a combined £320 million but have failed to impress Carragher with their work rate off the ball.

"Ekitike was really poor tonight," Carragher stated. "To be a top player for Liverpool as an attacking player, you need to be arrogant on the ball but humble off the ball. They're not humble off the ball, they don't do enough off the ball and that's why it's easy to play against Liverpool right now."

Carragher was particularly dismissive of Wirtz's contribution, describing the German midfielder as merely "neat and tidy" despite his £125 million price tag.

Legendary Players Fading

The pundit acknowledged that Liverpool's aging stars, including Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and goalkeeper Alisson, are no longer at their peak performance levels. However, he refused to criticize these club legends who have delivered so much success in recent seasons.

"I'm never going to criticize those players, the legends, they've done so much for the club and they've carried players," Carragher said. "What you're watching here now is Salah and Van Dijk, who were absolutely out of this world last season, carried Liverpool to the title. They're not the same players and the others are not quite good enough to step up."

PSG's Masterclass

Despite Liverpool's shortcomings, Carragher gave full credit to PSG's exceptional performance, comparing their display to Pep Guardiola's legendary Barcelona teams.

"The biggest compliment I can give them was it was like watching Pep Guardiola's Barcelona," Carragher said. "PSG were absolutely out of this world."

The defeat leaves Liverpool with significant questions to answer as they continue their Champions League campaign, with Carragher's analysis highlighting both tactical and personnel issues that need urgent attention.
