Michael Carrick Drops Major Hint on Kobbie Mainoo's Manchester United Future
Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has strongly indicated that a new contract for rising star Kobbie Mainoo is progressing positively, stating the club is in a "good place" with the negotiations. The 20-year-old midfielder, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2027, has seen a dramatic resurgence under Carrick's leadership after falling out of favor under previous manager Ruben Amorim.
From Doubt to Key Player Under Carrick's Guidance
Mainoo initially broke into the first team as a teenager under Erik ten Hag but subsequently dropped down the pecking order following Amorim's appointment. His future at Old Trafford appeared uncertain, with loan moves widely speculated before Amorim's departure and Carrick's arrival as interim boss. Carrick, a former England midfielder, has since reinstated Mainoo to the starting lineup, where the academy graduate has become a regular fixture during United's recent upturn in form.
This revival has been so significant that Mainoo has earned a recall to the England national team, reigniting hopes of securing a spot in Thomas Tuchel's squad for the upcoming World Cup. Carrick emphasized his long-standing admiration for the player, noting he has known Mainoo since the midfielder was just 13 or 14 years old, during Carrick's earlier coaching stint with the club.

The 12-cap England international currently earns approximately £25,000 per week, but a new deal could see his weekly wages increase by around £100,000, reflecting his elevated status and contributions to the team.
When questioned ahead of United's crucial Premier League clash with Leeds United on Monday night, Carrick expressed optimism about the ongoing talks. "Obviously we'd like to think so, yeah, and it's getting closer so we're positive with that," Carrick stated. "We're calm with it, but we're positive with it. Time will tell how it goes, but at the moment we're in a good place with it."

Carrick has consistently highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent at Manchester United, with Mainoo serving as a prime example. "This club needs young players coming through and laying the foundation for understanding what it means, not only for the players or the squad, but for the club and the supporters," Carrick explained in January. "It is something we need to grasp and build on and Kobbie is a prime example. To come through so quickly and have that rapid rise, he had to play in some awfully big games and had to impact those it shows an awful lot of quality in terms of his character and being able to handle it."
As Manchester United prepares to host Leeds, a victory would solidify their third-place position in the Premier League, moving them three points ahead of Aston Villa in fourth.
