Carrick Narrows Gap on Solskjaer in Manchester United Interim Manager Race
Carrick vs Solskjaer for Man Utd Interim Manager Role

The race to become Manchester United's interim manager has intensified, with Michael Carrick now running close to former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the temporary role at Old Trafford. The Guardian understands that while Solskjaer remains the slight favourite, the gap between the two candidates has significantly narrowed.

Executive Decision Pending Face-to-Face Interviews

United's chief executive, Omar Berrada, and director of football, Jason Wilcox, will not appoint an interim manager until they have conducted in-person interviews with both men. These crucial meetings are scheduled to take place on Thursday, with the possibility of extending into Friday if necessary.

This decision follows the team's most recent outing under the current caretaker, Darren Fletcher, who oversaw a 2-2 Premier League draw away at Burnley on Wednesday night. Despite United dominating with 30 shots to Burnley's seven, they were unable to secure all three points.

Fletcher Confirmed for FA Cup Duty

Speaking after the match at Turf Moor, Darren Fletcher confirmed that the club's executive has asked him to remain in charge for the upcoming FA Cup fourth-round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

"They've informed me they'd like me to take the team for Sunday," Fletcher stated. "There was a feeling that might have been the case from Monday, but we wanted to focus on Burnley. I'm tasked with leading the team on Sunday, so all my focus and energy goes to that now."

Reflecting on the Burnley performance, Fletcher added: "They put in a performance that should win the match. We created a lot of chances... It wasn't perfect, we started slow. We scored two fantastic goals. Still lots to work on but I was really pleased with their efforts."

Potential for Familiar Partnership

Should the executive team opt for Solskjaer, it is believed that Michael Carrick would consider returning as his assistant manager. This would recreate a partnership familiar to United fans; Carrick previously served as Solskjaer's assistant after the Norwegian was appointed permanent manager in March 2019, following his own successful interim spell from December 2018.

The 44-year-old Carrick also has brief experience as the main man in the dugout. Following Solskjaer's sacking in November 2021, Carrick took temporary charge for three matches, winning two and drawing one.

The coming days will be decisive for Manchester United's short-term future, as the club's hierarchy seeks stability for the remainder of the season while continuing their search for a permanent managerial appointment.
