Chelsea Takes Disciplinary Action Against Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea Football Club has imposed a significant punishment on midfielder Enzo Fernandez, dropping him from the squad for two crucial upcoming matches. This decision comes in response to the player's repeated public comments that cast doubt over his future at Stamford Bridge.
Manager Confirms Suspension
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior confirmed the disciplinary measure during a press conference on Friday. 'I spoke with Enzo an hour ago. We've made a decision – he won't be available for tomorrow's game and he won't be available for Manchester City,' Rosenior stated. The suspension means Fernandez will miss Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester City.
'It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way,' Rosenior continued. 'I have got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. It's not ideal. A lot of it stemmed from a really difficult ten days, probably the most difficult ten days of my career.'
Controversial Comments Spark Controversy
The controversy began when Fernandez raised eyebrows following Chelsea's disappointing defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. In an interview with ESPN Argentina, the midfielder refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window. That same evening, in a separate interview, Fernandez questioned the club's decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca.
Although Fernandez later confirmed there had been 'no talks' with Real Madrid amid speculation linking him to the Spanish giants, he stoked the flames once more during the international break. The Argentine international stated that Madrid would be his ideal place to live if he were to leave London, further fueling transfer rumors.
Club Culture Takes Priority
Rosenior emphasized that protecting the club's culture was paramount in making this decision. 'Enzo, firstly, as a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect for what he has achieved and what he is as a player,' the manager said. 'He's frustrated because he wants us to be successful. In terms of the decision, it's not all about me, or the sporting directors, the ownership, the players, we are aligned in every decision that we make. It was a joint decision.'
The Chelsea manager clarified that this punishment doesn't necessarily close the door on Fernandez's future at the club. 'The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect the culture, and in terms of that, a line was crossed in the international break.' When asked about Fernandez's long-term future at Chelsea, Rosenior declined to speculate, stating: 'In terms of speaking for him, what he wants and his future, it's not for me to speak about. I want to focus on a massive tomorrow where we can make an FA Cup semi-final.'
Different Treatment for Cucurella
Interestingly, another Chelsea player who was outspoken during the international break will not face similar punishment. Left-back Marc Cucurella also questioned the decision to sack Maresca and criticized the club's youth-centric transfer approach. The Spaniard additionally mentioned that a return to Barcelona would be 'hard to turn down.'
However, Rosenior confirmed that Cucurella's situation is being handled differently. 'That's a separate case. Marc is available and will be involved tomorrow,' the manager stated. 'Everybody knows Marc's character. He is passionate and he wants to do well. It was a long interview. He spoke his mind. When I was with him yesterday, I reminded him he can be honest with me. That takes time. To build those relationships, it takes time. Marc is fully committed. He wants to be here. He has made that very, very clear to me and he believes in where we are going.'
The contrasting treatment of these two players highlights Chelsea's nuanced approach to player discipline, balancing individual circumstances with the need to maintain club standards and culture during a challenging period for the London club.
