Chelsea Running Stats Under Scrutiny After Rosenior Sacking
Chelsea Running Stats Under Scrutiny After Rosenior Exit

Chelsea's woeful capitulation has reached historic lows, with the club suffering five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a goal for the first time since 1912. This dismal run cost Liam Rosenior his job after just 106 days in charge. The Blues were comfortably outrun by Brighton in midweek, with the Seagulls covering 101.2 km to Chelsea's 94 km, sparking Rosenior's ire as he claimed only three players 'gave everything'.

Running Stats Predate Rosenior

While Rosenior's authority waned in recent weeks, raising suspicions of players downing tools, the running statistics tell a different story. Chelsea have been outrun in all 34 Premier League fixtures this season, a trend that began under Enzo Maresca. Even during October and November, when whispers of a title challenge emerged, Chelsea were outrun by Liverpool in a 2-1 victory and in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City and Arsenal rank first and third for total distance covered this season, suggesting teams that run more often succeed. However, Leeds United, flirting with relegation until recently, are second. 'It is an easy stat to look at when things aren't going well,' said Steven Smith, CEO of Kitman Labs, a performance analytics firm. 'But you have to consider the context. Distance covered doesn't automatically determine wins or losses.'

Style of Play vs. Running

Not every team is built to outrun opponents. Maresca noted last May that his squad was not equipped for transitional games requiring more mileage. 'When you attack quick, the opposition attack quick, and it becomes a transition game,' he said. 'And we are not good enough for transition games. Our worst moments are all games where the game became transition.'

Smith added, 'It simply might not be Chelsea's goal to outrun every team. Distance covered is not the same as intensity. Teams measure accelerations, decelerations, high-speed running meters, or entries above a speed threshold. Someone covering 15 km without meaningful touches can be less impactful than a player with short, fast bursts involved in decisive moments.'

Indeed, while Chelsea trailed Manchester United in total distance in a recent defeat, they had a higher sprint percentage. 'It is not a fitness competition,' Smith stressed. The numbers may not tell the full story, but Chelsea's performances have been below acceptable levels for too long. Another managerial change plunges the club into uncertainty once again.
