Rio Ferdinand Brands Barcelona's £26m Rashford Deal 'Absolute Robbery'
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has launched a scathing assessment of Barcelona's potential £26 million move for Marcus Rashford, describing the proposed transfer fee as "an absolute robbery." The ex-England international made the comments after witnessing Rashford's resurgence in form during his loan spell at the Catalan giants.
Rashford's Resurgence at Barcelona
Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan last summer following a public falling out with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim that saw him frozen out of first-team contention at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old forward, once considered United's shining academy product, had seen his goal return plummet dramatically during the 2023/24 campaign before seeking a fresh start in Spain.
Though not always a guaranteed starter at Camp Nou, Rashford has rediscovered his scoring touch under Hansi Flick's management, contributing 11 goals and 13 assists across all competitions. His latest strike proved particularly significant - a crucial equalizer in Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid that helped maintain their commanding lead at the top of La Liga.
"I'm very happy with Marcus," Flick told reporters after the match. "He has shown his quality and he scored an important goal." However, the Barcelona head coach remained tight-lipped about the club's plans for Rashford beyond the current season when his loan agreement expires.
Ferdinand's Blunt Assessment
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the six-time Premier League winner delivered a frank evaluation of the potential transfer. "If Barcelona get him for the reported £26m that we're talking about and they get that version of Marcus Rashford, that is an absolute robbery, it's a steal," Ferdinand declared.
Ferdinand expressed mixed emotions about Rashford's situation, acknowledging his desire to see the forward succeed while recognizing that his Manchester United career appears to be over. "I just say good luck to him, I want him to do well, because I've seen him grow as a young player at United," he added.
When asked if he would welcome an in-form Rashford back to Old Trafford, Ferdinand responded emphatically: "Absolutely! If Marcus Rashford is playing like that... that goal there is Marcus Rashford. That isn't a surprise. We're not sitting here going, 'Oh my God, did you see what Marcus Rashford did the other day? Never knew he could do that!'... no no, that's what we expect."
The Transfer Situation
Barcelona reportedly hold an option to sign Rashford permanently for £26 million this summer, with recent reports suggesting the Catalan club are sufficiently impressed to exercise that clause. Contrary to some Spanish media speculation, sources indicate the option remains valid and has not expired.
Ferdinand believes Rashford's recent performances have likely convinced the player himself to seek a permanent move to Spain. "I think Marcus Rashford is looking forward, I think deep down he'll want to go to Barcelona and I just hope that actually materializes for him," the former defender stated.
While acknowledging Rashford hasn't consistently reached his previous heights, Ferdinand noted: "We're seeing more glimpses of it that would be making me go, 'I'd bet on that,' and if I was Barcelona then I'd take him."
Rashford's Barcelona Experience
The Manchester United academy product has openly expressed his enjoyment of life in Catalonia, describing Barcelona as providing "a fantastic environment" for his "football journey." In a recent interview with Spanish publication Sport, Rashford emphasized his competitive motivations.
"Of course this is what I want, but it's not the reason why I'm pushing and working hard," Rashford explained. "The reason why is because I want to win. Barcelona is a fantastic club. A club that is known for winning, and it's this type of pressure - I want to say pressure but it's not a bad type of pressure."
He added: "It's a pressure that you look forward to and a pressure that I want to have whilst I'm playing football. If I'm at a club that doesn't demand these things then it's more difficult for me to be motivated."
Rashford still has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract, but Ferdinand believes "that ship has sailed" regarding any potential return to Old Trafford. With Barcelona reportedly ready to make the loan move permanent, the summer transfer window could see one of the Premier League's most debated deals come to fruition.
