FIFA's Infantino: No Alternative Plan if Iran Skips World Cup
FIFA: No Plan B if Iran Misses World Cup, Says Infantino

FIFA President Firm: No Alternative Plan Exists for Iran's World Cup Absence

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has emphatically declared that there is no contingency plan in place should Iran fail to participate in the upcoming World Cup, while simultaneously dismissing any possibility of moving their scheduled matches from the United States to Mexico. This statement comes as Iran's involvement in the tournament remains uncertain due to escalating geopolitical conflicts.

Geopolitical Standoff Threatens Iran's World Cup Participation

Iran secured qualification for the World Cup but is currently embroiled in a tense stand-off with FIFA following military actions by the US and Israel against Iran in late February. Iranian authorities have repeatedly stated they will not compete in the US, where their group stage games are set to be held, creating a significant diplomatic and sporting impasse.

In a recent interview with Latin American television network N+ Univision, Infantino stated, "There is no Plan B, C, or D. There is only Plan A." He elaborated, "FIFA cannot resolve geopolitical conflicts; we are a sports organisation. However, we use the power of football to build bridges. Our thoughts are with everyone suffering from these wars, but we expect all teams to compete in a spirit of fair play and mutual respect according to the set itinerary."

Potential Sanctions and Fixed Tournament Locations

Should Iran decide to withdraw from the World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, they face severe consequences including substantial fines and potential bans from future FIFA tournaments. This adds pressure on the Iranian Football Federation to resolve the dispute and ensure their team's participation.

Infantino further clarified that relocating Iran's matches from Los Angeles and Seattle is not an option, especially with less than three months remaining until the tournament kicks off. He explained, "We are in regular contact with the Iranian Football Federation, as we are with all 48 participating associations. But I want to be very clear: we have a schedule. This schedule was announced in December 2025, and our principle is to proceed as planned."

He continued, "We want the World Cup to go ahead as scheduled. We have seen the passion of the Iranian fans, and we believe the team earns its place on the pitch. We are working to ensure the best possible conditions for every team, but the tournament locations are fixed. The world expects a total party, and that is what we will deliver in all 16 host cities."

The situation highlights the complex intersection of international sports and global politics, with FIFA maintaining a firm stance on adherence to pre-established plans despite external pressures. The organization's commitment to its schedule underscores the logistical challenges and diplomatic efforts involved in hosting a mega-event like the World Cup.
