Two of football's biggest stars, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis, are set to tie the knot in a private New Year's Eve ceremony in Perth, Australia. The high-profile couple, who welcomed their first child together earlier this year, will exchange vows in front of 120 guests.
Intimate Ceremony and Personal Vows
In a recent episode of the podcast The Women's Game, hosted by Mewis's sister and former US teammate, the 34-year-old American midfielder revealed details of the upcoming nuptials. The ceremony will be held at a private residence, with a later start time to allow the celebration to merge with New Year's Eve festivities.
"The ceremony doesn't start until later because it's a New Year's Eve," Mewis explained. "We kind of shifted everything later because we want to celebrate New Year's Eve with everybody." The couple plan to write their own personal vows for the occasion.
A Love Story Forged in Football
The pair, who have been engaged for two and a half years, began dating in 2020. Kerr, the celebrated Chelsea striker and captain of the Australian national team, publicly confirmed their relationship via Instagram in August 2021. Their romance had been the subject of speculation after the US and Australian teams met at the Tokyo Olympics.
When asked on the podcast about the moment she knew Kerr was "the one," Mewis turned the question to her partner. Kerr, speaking off-camera, responded instantly: "The day I met you." Mewis echoed the sentiment, stating, "It is easy for us to say that now, but I think we both did know when we met each other. It was just like nothing that either of us had ever felt before."
Family First, Honeymoon on Hold
The wedding marks a joyous culmination of a significant year for the couple, who announced the birth of their son, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, in May 2024. Mewis recently shared a sneak peek of what appeared to be a wedding outfit on Instagram, captioning the post "Tomorrow ?❤️".
However, fans hoping for a traditional post-wedding getaway will have to wait. Due to Kerr's packed football schedule with Chelsea and the Matildas, an immediate honeymoon is not feasible. "But we are talking about going to the men's World Cup, which I know isn't very, like, honeymoonish," Mewis quipped, suggesting an alternative plan to attend the global sporting event together.
The union of these two international football icons is set to be a glamorous yet intimate affair, blending personal commitment with a shared love for the beautiful game and their new family.
