Aston Villa have emerged as serious contenders to sign England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid this month, in a move that could scupper Manchester United's own interest in the player.
Villa's Title Push Sparks Midfield Search
According to reports, Villa manager Unai Emery is keen to bolster his squad as they mount an unexpected challenge for the Premier League title. His side currently sit just six points behind leaders Arsenal after 21 games. Emery has long been an admirer of Gallagher's energetic style since his days at Chelsea and sees him as an ideal addition to his midfield.
Gallagher, 25, only moved to Atletico Madrid 18 months ago in a £34million deal, but a lack of consistent starts has fuelled speculation about a return to England. This season, he has made 27 appearances for the La Liga side but has been named in the starting lineup on only nine occasions. He was substituted at half-time during Atletico's Spanish Super Cup semi-final defeat to Real Madrid on Thursday.
Gallagher Intrigued by Villa Park Project
It is understood that while Gallagher is settled in Madrid and maintains a good relationship with manager Diego Simeone, he is 'interested' in the potential of a switch to Villa Park. The prospect of joining a team competing at the top of the Premier League and in the latter stages of the Europa League is a significant draw.
A key factor for the England international will be securing regular first-team football to enhance his chances of selection for Thomas Tuchel's upcoming World Cup squad. Villa's status as genuine contenders on multiple fronts presents a compelling opportunity.
Financial Hurdles and United's Stance
The transfer is not straightforward, however. Atletico Madrid have made it clear they would demand at least £35million to part with Gallagher. This poses a challenge for Villa, who are navigating a tight financial situation and also wish to recruit a defender and a forward in January.
Reports suggest Villa may explore a loan deal with an obligation to buy, but such a structure has been rejected by the Spanish club in the past. Meanwhile, Manchester United's position remains unclear. Gallagher was on a midfield shortlist at Old Trafford last summer alongside fellow Englishmen Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, but the recent sacking of manager Ruben Amorim may have altered their plans.
Gallagher is a product of Chelsea's academy, made 95 appearances for the Blues, and captained the side frequently before his departure. He also enjoyed a highly successful loan spell at Crystal Palace, proving his quality in the Premier League.
