Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed that attacking midfielder Jack Grealish was absent from his squad's Premier League fixture against Burnley due to illness.
Grealish Struck Down by Festive Virus
The 30-year-old England international was a notable omission from both the starting line-up and the bench as Everton travelled to Turf Moor on Saturday, December 27, 2025. Explaining the decision ahead of kick-off, Moyes stated: ‘He’s just got a bit of a virus and not been well over Christmas time, so he’s not available today.’
Grealish's absence added to Everton's selection headaches during the busy festive schedule. The Toffees were already without the injured Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye, who is away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Everton's Attacking Burden
Since joining Everton on loan from Manchester City last summer, Grealish has been a pivotal figure in their attack, appearing revitalised. His creativity has been crucial, with two goals and four assists in 16 appearances so far this season.
In his place, Moyes handed a rare start to summer signing Tyler Dibling, who joined from Southampton. Portuguese striker Beto also came into the side, replacing Thierno Barry in the forward line. These were two changes from the team that suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal the previous week.
Race Against Time for Forest Clash
The immediate concern for Everton is whether their key playmaker will recover in time for the next Premier League encounter. Everton are set to face Nottingham Forest away on Tuesday, December 30, leaving a short turnaround for Grealish to regain full fitness.
Moyes's side had hoped to capitalise on their match against relegation-threatened Burnley to move closer to the European qualification spots. The loss of Grealish's influence was a significant blow to those ambitions during a demanding period of the football calendar.
