Former Premier League striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has publicly admitted he was mistaken in his assessment of Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard, confessing he believed the player needed replacing last summer.
From Doubted Signing to Key Contributor
Leandro Trossard's journey at the Emirates Stadium has been one of steady, impressive progression. After a quiet start following his £27 million move from Brighton in 2023—where he managed just one goal in his first 22 appearances—the Belgian international has silenced his critics.
He exploded into form during the 2023-24 campaign, netting an impressive 17 goals, and followed that up by reaching double figures again last season. His current campaign shows no signs of slowing down, with seven goals already in all competitions.
Hasselbaink's Surprise Admission
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal's 3-2 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg victory over Chelsea, Hasselbaink made his surprising U-turn clear. "With all due respect to Leandro Trossard I am surprised," the ex-Chelsea star stated.
"I thought at the start of season that they needed something better in that position but he's done a hell of a job. He's filled that spot really, really well," Hasselbaink continued. "He's scored some seriously important goals at important times. He's surprising me and you can only say well done to him."
Hasselbaink added that he "didn't think he had it in him" but praised Trossard for delivering "week in, week out now." The pundit also highlighted the significant impact Trossard has had, noting his performances have even pushed Gabriel Martinelli into a reduced role.
A Vital Cog in Arteta's Machine
Trossard's value extends far beyond the scoresheet. His strong work ethic and intelligent off-the-ball movement have made him an indispensable part of Mikel Arteta's system. This was evident in the Chelsea cup tie, where he started the match before being substituted by Martinelli for the final 25 minutes.
The win gives Arsenal a one-goal advantage heading into the second leg as they aim for a place in the Carabao Cup final, where they would face either Manchester City or holders Newcastle United.
Reflecting on the first-leg result, Gunners boss Arteta said: "It's only half-time but I'm very proud of what the team has done. We played against a really good side at a really difficult place."
With their cup ambitions on track, Arsenal's immediate focus returns to the Premier League title race. They travel to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday, holding a six-point lead over second-placed Manchester City as they chase a first league crown since 2004.
