Stephen Hendry has made a bold prediction about Zhao Xintong after the defending champion's shock exit from the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible. Despite losing 13-10 to Shaun Murphy in the quarter-finals, Hendry believes Zhao will go on to win at least four world titles.
Hendry's High Praise for Zhao
Speaking on the BBC, Hendry said: "If Zhao Xintong doesn't win four world titles I'll be shocked. He's the future of the game." This is a significant statement, as only Hendry himself, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Steve Davis, Mark Selby, and John Higgins have won four or more world titles in the modern era.
Zhao's Stellar Season
Zhao entered the tournament as the clear favourite after winning the world title last year and adding three more ranking titles during a superb season. However, the infamous Crucible curse, which has prevented every first-time champion from defending their title the following year, struck again.
Despite the defeat, Zhao remains optimistic about his future. "I'm looking forward to the new season. I can have a rest now. I'm happy. Next season I will strongly come back," he said.
Murphy's Brilliance
Shaun Murphy produced a stunning performance to defeat Zhao, particularly with his long-potting in the final session. Zhao acknowledged Murphy's quality, saying: "Shaun today he played really, really well. He gave me big pressure. He played perfect snooker today. He deserved the win."
Murphy was equally complimentary about Zhao, stating: "I'm so in awe of Xintong and how he plays the game. When he's in full flow, he's just mesmerising to watch."
Davis Backs Zhao
Steve Davis also voiced his support for Zhao, saying: "He's a great player. He's had a great season. He's going to be around for many years to come and he'll be lifting plenty of silverware. He's got a sensible head on his shoulders. He's going to be a strong contender next season. I can't see him stumbling at all."
Looking Ahead
Murphy advances to the semi-finals, where he will face either Neil Robertson or John Higgins. Robertson leads Higgins 9-7 heading into the final session of their quarter-final. The semi-final is scheduled to begin on Thursday afternoon.
