Ian Wright Questions Arsenal Midfielder After Carabao Cup Final Defeat
Arsenal icon Ian Wright has openly criticized the performance of midfielder Martin Zubimendi following the Gunners' disappointing 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. The match, held at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon, saw City dominate with two second-half goals from Nico O'Reilly, leaving Arsenal struggling to maintain possession and control the game.
Midfield Struggles Highlighted in Post-Match Analysis
Wright pointed to Arsenal's midfield deficiencies as a key factor in their lackluster display. With key players Eberechi Eze sidelined due to an ankle injury and Martin Odegaard recovering from a knee issue, manager Mikel Arteta fielded a midfield trio of Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz. However, this combination consistently failed to establish dominance on the ball, allowing City to apply relentless pressure.
"I wanted us to put in the type of performance where if they are beaten, they played well and tried to do what they do," Wright stated after the match. "They pressed us high, we knocked it long and couldn't hold it. We didn't have any midfielders... I think Zubimendi's numbers will be interesting to see, I don't think he held onto the ball, he couldn't get on it to get our team playing."
Arsenal's Inability to Break City's Press
The first half remained tightly contested, but Manchester City seized control after halftime, exploiting Arsenal's deep defensive posture and inability to find an effective outlet in midfield. Wright emphasized that Zubimendi, in particular, struggled to influence the game, despite his known quality.
"We couldn't get out. In the end, it all just fell in on ourselves. It is a very disappointing one for me. It was a really poor performance in the end," Wright added. "We know the quality he [Zubimendi] has got, even he couldn't get going today."
This defeat marks a significant setback for Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, raising questions about their midfield depth and tactical approach against top-tier opponents like Manchester City.
